      (Blaye/Bordeaux, 1745 - Parigi, 1809) Scena storica Inchiostro e matita marrone su carta, cm 29X40 Allievo a Parigi di Joseph-Marie Vien e di Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié, fu ammesso nel 1769 al celebre Prix de Rome conseguendo il terzo premio. Nel 1774 il giovane artista si trasferì a Roma dove soggiornò fino al 1778, affinando il suo gusto neoclassico dipingendo soggetti storici. Pur esprimendo doti non comuni, Taillasson fu messo in ombra da David, ma come quest'ultimo fu profondamente influenzato dall'antichità classica e dai soggetti eroici.

      Jean-Joseph TAILLASSON (Bordeaux 1745-Paris 1809) Herminie gravant le nom de Tancrède sur un arbre Toile ovale 71 x 60 cm Porte une inscription sur l'arbre Tanc-amou Tancred i-ben moi Porte une inscription et une date au verso Taillasson-1796-Erminie Jean-Joseph Taillasson effectua un séjour à Rome entre 1772 et 1775, après avoir été élève dans l'atelier de Vien. Membre de l'Académie en 1782, il exposa régulièrement au Salon entre 1783 et 1806. Il publia également de nombreux ouvrages, fruits de ses réflexions sur l'art et la littérature. Exposé au Salon de 1796, notre tableau s'inspire du chant VII de la Jérusalem délivrée du Tasse. Alors qu'elle recherche Tancrède, Herminie trouve refuge chez un couple de bergers. Partageant leur vie durant quelques jours, elle mène les brebis au pâturage. Elle grave les initiales de Tancrède sur un arbre, symbole de son amour malheureux et sans issue. Exposition : Salon de Paris, 1796, n° 451.

He exhibited regularly at the Salon between 1783 and 1806, much of his work characterised by large theatrical compositions and grandiloquent emotion, qualities much admired by the connoisseur Lebreton. Taillasson was primarily a painter but he also wrote several notable art historical books, among them the Observations sur quelques grands peintres (Paris, 1807). Two studies for the present picture are known, both executed in black chalk on paper. The first, showing some notable differences in the objects on the right side but otherwise homogenous, is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (see J. Whiteley, op. cit., no. 19, illustrated). Another drawing, signed, is in a private collection, New York.
