  • Tak Tanabe, Duthie Books custom silk-screened 40th Anniversary banner and bookmark
    Jul. 26, 2020

Tak Tanabe, Duthie Books custom silk-screened 40th Anniversary banner and bookmark

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Duthie Books limited edition silkscreen banner, designed by Tak Tanabe for Duthie Books' 40th Anniversary, 1997. Duthie Books was legendary in BC, and in Canada, as one of the first chain bookstores. Bill Duthie himself was legendary, as a champion of books and also artists. When Chapters and Indigo entered the market there was an immediate conflict with the handselling, personal method of bookselling. The mighty fist of the new giant pressured publishers hard to discount deeply, and in turn the publishers pushed for display and endcap placement of their big titles. Duthie Books struggled to shift models even after launching their "big box" bookstore in the old Birks building in downtown Vancouver. Most of the Duthie Books locations closed in 1999 after going into receivership, leaving just one in Kitsilano, which continued for another 12 years, closing in 2010. Takao Tanabe, one of Canada's leading painters and printmakers, evolved from an abstract artist into a landscapist. In his landscapes he eliminates non-essential details, creating serene compositions which reward long contemplation. A distinguished art teacher and arts advocate, Tanabe was long associated with the Banff School of Fine Arts, Alberta. Tanabe trained from 1946 with Joseph Plaskett at the Winnipeg School of Art, Manitoba, then attended the University of Manitoba. In 1951-52 Tanabe studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, New York, under Hans Hoffman and Reuben Tam. He took a class in 1953 at Banff with the British painter William Scott. Back in Vancouver, Tanabe learned typography working for Robert R. Reid and founded Periwinkle Press. After briefly attending Banff School of Fine Arts, Alberta, he traveled Europe for two years, studying at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London, in 1953. Tanabe learned Japanese ink painting (sumi-e) and calligraphy at the Tokyo University of Arts in 1959-61. He studied with Ikuo Hirayama and Yanagida Taiun, a practitioner of single-stroke Zen calligraphy on a large scale. Tanabe has also admired the quietly powerful art of Caspar David Friedrich and Albert Bierstadt. The son of a commercial fisherman, Tanabe Tanabe summered in fishing camps on the Skeena River, B.C. He was interned as a Japanese alien during World War II. Tanabe's abstract paintings of the 1950s (Interior Arrangement with Red Hills, 1957) were succeeded in the early 1960s by Japanese-influenced ink drawings (Falling Water, 1967). From 1961 to 1968, Tanabe taught at the Vancouver Art School, painting murals. In 1968 he worked in Philadelphia, moving in 1969 to New York City. Based there until 1972, he painted hard-edge geometric abstracts in strong colours (Untitled No. 4, 1968). These evolved in the 1970s into semi-abstract landscapes dominated by wide horizons, influenced by Tanabe's encounters with northern Pennsylvania, the Hudson River Valley, and the Canadian praire and foothills. From 1973, Tanabe headed the Art Department and was Artist-in-Residence at Banff School of Fine Arts. He moved to Vancouver Island in 1980. Tanabe's quiet, light-bathed landscapes capture the essence of time and place, and reflect his interest in Zen Buddhism. He has exhibited since 1950, earning an international reputation. ~ National Gallery of Canada

During his seven-year stay in Banff he produced a series of paintings of the prairies. The paintings, based on Tanabe’s large collection of photographs and sketches, were reduced to their essential forms, eliminating all recognizable landmarks. He later stated, “I don’t feel the tug to paint a view that somebody can recognize as being from their front porch or from some crossroads. [F]or me it’s…really a generalized sense of space. What I think about the prairie is perhaps romantic but it is an enormously simple-looking space and within all that simplicity it’s very, very rich, very subtle. I think those are the things I have been trying to get in the paintings.”

Tanabe took a week to drive from Winnipeg to Banff with the intention of painting the prairies, taking photographs when a scene caught his eye. While the prairies have led other Canadian artists towards abstraction, these paintings were to become Tanabe’s first representational landscapes. According to Elissa Barnard, Tanabe later stated that the landscape is “really rather simple abstraction, the band of sky and the band of land.”

Thom, (ed.), Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver, 2005, pages 38-42.Note:While in London circa 1953, Tanabe began his series of White Paintings, which he continued when he left London for Winnipeg in 1955. Tanabe used white in the paintings as a tool in what he called a formal “cleaning up” process, which he explained was a way to temper colours that were excessively full or opaque. Although the White Paintings are non-figurative, after completion Tanabe often saw them as landscapes and later referred to them as such. Their titles, usually taken from poetry he was reading, are often indicative of that.See Lot 24 for another work from this series.

TAKAO TANABEHERE & THERE A DEWDROP GLISTENINGoil on canvassigned and dated ‘58 35.75 ins x 26 ins; 90.8 cms x 66 cms Provenance:The Women’s Committee of the Art Gallery of TorontoPrivate Collection, OntarioLiterature:Ian M. Thom et al., Takao Tanabe, Douglas & McIntyre, Toronto, 2005, page 110 and page 58 for a similar work entitled Untitled (NYC), 1952, reproduced.Note:“Tanabe developed the confidence to refrain. Many of his works embrace the pleasures of near monochrome, constrained middle greys, rounded landforms and non-agitated, curvilinear flowing lines, generating tranquil, transcendent pictures.” Tanabe’s White Paintings were a series of works that the artist began in England and continued to paint through to 1958 in Vancouver. Titles for most of these works, explained Tanabe, were formulated only once the paintings had left the studio for exhibition. They were often drawn from poetry which Tanabe was reading at the time. Here & There a Dewdrop Glistening seems no exception to this method of naming. Painted in the year prior to his first trip to Japan and in the final year of the White Painting series, the work exudes a refrain of colour over geometry. In swoops of shades and pigment, Tanabe creates phantoms, passionate whispers on the canvas. See Lot 33 for another work from this series.

In the Prairie Paintings, Tanabe reduced the prairies to their essential features and, in turn, emphasized their expansiveness. Describing a similar work from the series, Nasgaard writes: "A dust storm, which can give an unearthly yellow tinge of refracted light to a prairie sky, might be clearing or approaching... (T)he foreground is modulated with dense velvety darks and crossed... by the gash of a cart road or dry riverbed... The atmosphere is palpable and raw and filled with subtly scintillating light."

While this work is not dated, it would seem to fit into this period of Tanabe's oeuvre.
