Tavernier - Rare Western Hemisphere map showing California as an island

          Est: $1,500 - $2,500

This map of the western hemisphere is entitled Carte de l'Amerique corrigee et augmentee dessus Toutes les aultres cy devant faictes par P. Bertius and was done by Melchior Tavernier for his work Theatre Geographique. It was published in 1661. This is the western hemisphere panel of a two panel map. The map draws influence from Bertius's maps of the four continents as well as from Hondius's map of 1618. The map features insets of the polar regions, a completed northwest coast line, mapping of the Great Lakes, a completed southern coast of Tierra del Fuego, and decorative ships and sea monsters. Melchior Tavernier (1564-1641) was one of the most important mapsellers and publishers in France. His family was very involved with the publishing trade. He worked and learned from Henricus Hondius early in his career. He published for other noted cartographers including N. Sanson, N. Tassing, and P. Bertius.

Paris: Melchior Tavernier, 1641. 8υo (145 x 96 mm). 61 engraved plates, two folding (small hole in one folding plate). (Some marginal dampstaining.)
