John Taylor Arms was one of the foremost American printmakers of the 20th century, known for his exquisite compositions and exacting details which gave his etchings a very realistic, almost photographic appearance. He specialized in images of European architecture and cathedrals, such as this ornately carved Spanish doorway.

    John Taylor (American, B.1954) "The Eliza Anderson" a model ship interpretation of the 1856 paddle steamer made from found materials to look as if the vessel had been buried or under water for half a century. The PS Eliza Anderson operated from 1858 to 1898 mainly on Puget Sound, the Strait of Georgia, and the Fraser River but also for short periods in Alaska. She was generally known as the Old Anderson and was considered slow and underpowered even for the time. Even so, it was said of her that "no steamboat ever went slower and made money faster." She played a role in the Underground Railroad and had a desperate last voyage to Alaska as part of the Klondike Gold Rush. Size: 43'' x 18'' x 8'' (109 x 46 x 20 cm) with base.     This is an etching of the Albi Cathedral by John Taylor Arms. Arms studied architecture at MIT in Boston, served in the Navy, then devoted himself to etching. His initial subject was the Brooklyn Bridge. Then he worked on images of Gothic churches and cathedrals in France and Italy. He also made a series of prints of American cities. The etching depicts the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Cecilia, also known as the Albi Cathedral, in Albi, France, that sustained damage during the French Revolution. It is signed in the margin at the bottom and dated 1927. The overall size is 16 x 20 in. wide and the sight size is 10 1/4 x 13 1/2 in. wide.
