§ Leonard Campbell Taylor, RA, ROI, RP (British, 1874-1969) The Rehearsal oil on canvas, in a gilt frame h:69 w: 100 cm Provenance: By descent within the family of A A Paton. Leonard Campbell Taylor's The Rehearsal is in Tate Britain. The musicians are shown grouped around the Broadwood piano used by Chopin during his recitals in London in 1848. The model who posed for the seated violinist was Monsieur Beguinot, the famous Soho restaurateur. The cellist was a tailor whom the artist found standing on the kerb in the Cornmarket, Oxford. The man standing on the left and the girl seated at the piano are professional models; the second girl was the daughter of a Surrey farmer. The present painting is a small version approximately 20×30 in., which was in the collection of A A Paton. Campbell Taylor studied at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford, subsequently at the St. John's Wood School, and from 1905 the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected to the Royal Society of Oil Painters in 1905, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1909 and elected ARA in 1923 and a Royal Academician in 1931. He travelled and painted in Spain, and lived in later life in East Anglia, dying in Cambridge on 1st July 1969.
