After the war, he served as the fifth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, having been appointed by President John F. Kennedy. Good content T.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Arlington, October 29, 1968, to cadet John Addy responding to questions asked of him. In part: '....The most successful or at least most important battle in which I was engaged was the landing onf Normandy on D Day...I doubt that any military commander ever acts as a consequence of a conscious application of any principle of war any more than an architect in designing a building is thinking of the theorems of geometry. The study of war tends to impart the experience of commanders of the past to those of the present or future...The decisions taken by the commanders in the battle at the time are pragmatic ones reflecting both their own experience and knowledge acquired from theoretical studies...' Chiping around the margins, else fine condition.

Till's beaten and bullet-ridden body was found in the river with a cotton gin fan wired around his neck three days later. In spite of copious evidence, the accused killers (both white men) were acquitted by an all-white jury. The two men later admitted their guilt publicly.
