Rolla Taylor (1872-1970) San Antonio (Street to San Fernando Cathedral) oil on canvas 20 x 14 inches 26.75 x 20.75 inches (frame) signed lower left: Rolla Taylor verso: hand-carved artist's frame initialed and dated RT XXII Rolla Taylor is known for his depictions of San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country. This painting captures a romanticized view of downtown San Antonio from along Market Street, looking west from the area of the old Market House. The pair of conical domes and octagonal tower in the background are the City Hall of San Antonio and the southern tower of San Fernando Cathedral as well as the landscaped Plaza de las Islas is in the middle ground. In reality, the dome of City Hall is nearly directly behind, to the west, of San Fernando Cathedral, demonstrating that Taylor exercised artistic license in his perspective/composition, but produced a painting that is no less charming.

Rolla Sims Taylor, originally from Galveston, Texas, started painting at the age of 14. ROLLA SIMS TAYLOR (American, 1872-1970) Downtown on the River Oil on canvas 20 x 24 inches (50.8 x 61.0 cm) Signed lower right: Rolla Taylor Multiple titles inscribed verso Born in Galveston, Taylor began painting in 1890 and moved to San Antonio the following year. He studied with Robert Onderdonk and Jose Arpa, and was later influenced by Julian Onderdonk. He also received a law degree from the Cuero Institute, Cuero, Texas. Taylor was a charter member of the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts and a member of the Texas Fine Arts Association. He exhibited in the 1910 Cotton Carnival and the San Antonio competitions. During his career, Taylor painted a number of scenes of the San Antonio River, often including its bridges. Downtown on the River is a fairly rare example, as it has a slight stylization leaning toward Regionalism, something rather unusual in Taylor's oeuvre.

Framed.Rolla Sims Taylor, originally from Galveston, Texas, started painting at the age of 14. In 1894 Taylor won first prize in a local art competition. He won $500 for his winning painting (Entrance to the Spanish Governors Palace, San Antonio). Taylor graduated from the Cuero Institute and later studied under Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, Jose Arpa and Theodore Gentilz. Also studied in France for 3 months and with Arthur W. Best in San Francisco & Frederick Fursman in Michigan. Taylor was a personal friend of Julian Onderdonk. Memberships Include: American Federation of Arts; Chicago Society of Artists; Independent Society of Artists of New York; San Antonio Art League; Southern States Art League; River Art Group.
