Robinson, and J.Cottle, 1796. *** First edition of the poet's first book of poems, which also contains the first published verses of Coleridge's lifelong friend Charles Lamb. In the heartfelt and somewhat urgent letter, addressed to 'my dear Madam', Coleridge enquires anxiously after the health of his friend Sir Basil Montagu, whom he last saw rushing off 'in such a thick fog and chilling damp' that the poet fears he may have 'caught cold'. Wordsworth, who introduced Montagu to Coleridge at Racedown in 1797, describes the former as 'very kind, very humane, very generous, very ready to serve with a thousand other good qualities: but in the practical business of life the arrantest Mar-plan that ever lived' (Letters).

"I declare my intention of relating facts simply and nakedly, without epithets or comments; and if at any time the opposition and ministerial prints differ from each other in detail of events, faithfully to state such difference. It would be absurd to promise an equal neutrality in the political Essays. My bias, however, is in favor of principles, not men." - Coleridge. From the first no. of The Watchman.

Coleridge (Samuel Taylor, poet, critic, and philosopher, 1772-1834) Avviso. Gli abusi che de' passaporti soliti dispensari in quest'Isola..., printed broadside in Italian, royal cypher at tail, worming in four places at end slightly affecting text (1 wormhole forming a tear in text and right margin), most in margins, slightly browned, slight dampstaining in right margin, folds, [1 copy in Yale University], 332 x 230mm., [Malta], 23rd June 1805. ⁂ A broadside dealing with the abuse of British passports by Maltese ship owners, who were apparently selling them to foreign ships as protection against capture by Barbary pirates. No more passports in this format would be issued, and both British and Maltese vessels would require new documents to afford safe passage.
