            Lyle Tayson (1924 - 2014) Leatherworker Craftsmen

            Est: $100 - $1,000

Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Leatherworker Craftsmen" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Leatherworker stamp issue of July 4, 1977. During the Colonial era, leather was one of the most widely used materials. It was used for boots, shoes, coats, gloves, aprons, belts, harness, and many other things. Belts drove simple machines and served as valves in pumps. When America's War for Independence started, the need for leather for military use increased at once by leaps and bounds. The leather harness, for instance, pulled artillery guns and wagons. And, to protect fragile paper musket cartridges from dampness or damage, leather was used to make stiff waterproof cartridge boxes. Every soldier needed one, for damp cartridges could lose battles. As the army grew, more leather was needed. The constant cry from commanders in the field for supplies was not always heeded, but civilian craftsmen, and Leatherworkers in particular, were responsive when possible. To increase production, they shortened the tanning process, producing only slightly inferior leather. In their own shops they worked long and hard, knowing that in the army men went without shoes. These civilian craftsmen answered freedom's call as fully as soldiers and sailors. They, too, risked their lives and their fortunes as collaborators of rebellion. Image Size: 26 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 30.25 x 24 in. Unframed. (B05136)

            Est: $350 - $700

Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Tlingit Tribe" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 15c Tligit Tribe stamp issued September 25, 1980. The mythological history of the Tlingits goes back to a time when everyone lived in darkness in a village at the mouth of the Nass River. The sun, moon and stars were kept in a box by the wily Raven, a supreme deity whose trickery eventually put them in the sky to set a chaotic world in order. Today, the Tlingits inhabit the islands and coastal lands of southern Alaska from Yakutat Bay to Cape Fox. Their beliefs have changed somewhat but, as the Tlingits themselves will say, "To understand us, you must know our myths, our stories." Mask making, for example, is rather formal, utilizing subtle sculptural forms to lure the shaman's spiritual helpers. The Tlingit shamans traditionally owned and wore a large number of masks in performing their duties as healers, exorcists and seers. In fact, the shamans possessed the finest representations of the human face, although their masks often symbolized animals and other natural phenomena. Through the centuries, the Tlingits developed a tradition of providing a face for every object in their material world, be it animate or inanimate. And these faces were the essence of their masks. Carvers were highly respected for their gift, the power to see what others could not and to transform their visions into impressive and instantly recognizable images. To this end, Tlingit masks often had mouths and eyes that opened and closed and eyebrows that rose and descended, giving them an eerily expressive quality. Image Size: 20 x 18 in. Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Bella Coola Tribe" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 15c Bella Coola Tribe stamp issued September 25, 1980. In the dead of winter, they would meet as members of secret societies. Some were healing societies, some conjuring societies, some war societies, and some societies for inducting youths or new members. First, initiates were induced into trance-like states for communion with the spirits. Then, by the light of slow-burning fires, the dances would begin. Bella Coola ceremonial masks were among the most dramatic, and often terrifying, of any of the tribes of the Northwest Coast. Although they were nearly always human-like, they were usually large with heavy, fleshy surfaces. The faces bore thick eyebrows and ponderous jowls as enlarged, staring eyes seemed thrust forward from their sockets above thick, full lips. The mouths were frequently ajar, as if arrested in sudden surprise, and tension was built into the expression. Many masks featured complex appendages, moveable parts and faces within faces. Others gyrated, rotated or popped up from secret places within another mask. Thus, the dancers wearing these masks could often tell a whole story just by their proper operation. The Bella Coola had a custom of burning their masks following tribal ceremonies, providing incentive for carvers to create anew the masks needed for each year's dances. Sadly, between 1860 and 1900, whole regions became ravaged by disease and the Bella Coola and their remarkable art forms almost disappeared. Image Size: 20 x 18 in. Overall Size: 22.5 x 18.5 in. Lyle Tayson (1924 - 2014) "Wheelwright/Craftsmen"

            Est: $500 - $1,000

Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Wheelwright/Craftsmen" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Wheelwright stamp issue of July 4, 1977. In Colonial times, everything a man couldn't carry on his back moved on wheels or by boat. Consequently, Colonial commerce depended heavily on wagons. Good Wheelwrights were much in demand. Lasting quality in both design and function was a great measure of a craftsman's skill. Wheelwrights whose work didn't last faced ridicule, loss of trade, and financial disaster. For example, a broken wagon wheel could cause a certain amount of inconvenience. But a carriage wheel breaking at a gallop might cripple or kill someone. During the Revolution, Wheelwrights were so important they often were permanently attached to military units to repair wheels broken by rough use or enemy fire. Soldiers' lives literally hung on their skill. A cannon that couldn't be moved into position promptly because of a faulty wheel wasn't worth very much. As shown in the artwork, the Colonial wheel was not a flat disc but rather was shaped like a dish -- with the hub, spokes, and rim forming a shallow cone. To make it -- and to build it well Wheelwrights chose their woods with special care. Some liked gum for the hubs. Others preferred white oak or hickory for spokes and fellies -- the outer rims. And after it was chosen, two full years of seasoning was a minimum time to ensure that the wood would take the jolts of swamp roads and frozen ruts that commerce and cannon would follow. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the U.S. 13c Butterflies stamp issue of June 6, 1977. Thoreau said that the study of butterflies extends the limits of being in new directions, so that "I walk in nature with a sense of greater space and freedom. It suggests, besides, that the universe is not rough-hewn, but perfect in its details." A butterfly is among the most beautiful of creatures. There's so little structure or power to produce such a flash of light and color. Their color is partly dyes and partly diffraction of light and is similar to the colors seen on a wet oily street or in a rainbow. The colors, some brilliant and some subdued, protect the butterflies by letting them blend with their background, by advertising that they taste bad, by suddenly dazzling their pursuer, or by making them resemble a larger animal the pursuer fears. Butterflies have been seen at amazing heights by airplane pilots and far out to sea where they have landed on ships to rest during migrations. Most species eat plants, some eat insects, and some cross-pollinate the many flowers they visit. Some newly-hatched bachelor butterflies swarm around a mud puddle for days before beginning their search for a mate. There are species which like to fight, attacking birds, dogs, and people, often driving them away. Butterflies and the rest of nature were classified by Carl von Linne -- Linnaeus in Latin. His name is part of the scientific name of many butterflies, indicating that he named them first, for example, the pipevine swallowtail is Papilio philenor Linnaeus. Image Size: 17 x 16 in. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Checkerspot Butterfly stamp issued June 6, 1977. The family to which the Checkerspot belongs, genus Euphydryas, is found throughout the northern hemisphere, with eight species in Europe and six species in North America. There are no known tropical species. This Checkerspot is also known as the Baltimore because it carries the orange and black colors of Cecilius Calvert, Second Baron Baltimore, who is more universally known as Lord Baltimore. He was granted the colony of Maryland by King James I of England. This colony became the State of Maryland which still carries the orange and black of Lord Baltimore on its insignia. This type butterfly is widespread but individuals remain in one particular area, usually a wet meadow where its food plant, the turtle head, grows. The young larvae gather on the same plants, weaving a silken web around the tender young leaves of the turtle head. Here they remain and eat until autumn and hibernate through the winter. In spring the larvae separate and continue feeding until they become adults during May and June. The Checkerspot or Baltimore is an eastern butterfly and is found from southern Canada south to Georgia and Missouri. Scientists believe that butterflies' bright colors may dazzle predators and make it difficult to catch the butterfly. The bird or other predator probably sees some butterflies as bright flashes of light which vanish when the butterfly lights on a branch and folds its wings. Image Size: 17 x 16 in. In the late 19th century, American manufacturer George Eastman developed a small box camera with a fixed-focus lens. Eastman was building on the work of photographic pioneers like Frenchman Louis J.M. Daguerre, Britain's William H.F. Talbot and Richard L. Maddox. In 1900, Eastman introduced the less expensive Brownie, a box camera named for its designer Frank A. Brownell. Prior to photography and the advent of Kodak's Brownie, visual memories were reserved exclusively for the rich and famous -- people who could afford to commission artists. In the 20th century, for the first time in history, the convenient, lightweight and moderately-priced Brownie camera gave ordinary people the means to capture scenes with intense personal meaning -- the precious moments of their daily lives. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the U.S. 15c Indian Art stamps issued September 25, 1980. One of North America's most lavish and colorful Indian cultures once thrived along the narrow Pacific Coastal strip from Southeast Alaska to Washington state. For it was there that the Northwest Coast Indians settled thousands of years ago, taking advantage of the almost limitless supplies of food and natural resources. From the sea, they gleaned nutritious salmon, herring, cod and even whales. And it was often said that, "when the tide goes out, the table is set," because of the wide variety of mollusks left along the shore. From the thick, dank forests came giant cedar bark used for firewood, canoes and even cloth. And, within the forests were fur-bearing animals which eventually led to a rich trade with Europeans. Needless to say, this wealth of resources left the Coastal Indians with much leisure time which they used to create, carve and decorate ceremonial paraphernalia, lavish houses and elaborate canoes. Sharing a deep and abiding reverence for the wonders of the universe, the Northwest Indians believed that all creatures and things in the physical world had animus or spirit. For this reason, they devoted much time and effort to the ceremonies which would prevent destructive storms, placate the spirits around them and prevent demons from thwarting their plans. The result was exquisitely carved totem poles, magnificent headdresses and intricate masks that represent amazing artistic abilities. Image Size: 20 x 18 in. Overall Size: 30.25 x 22.25 in. Unframed. Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Indians of the Northwest in a Canoe" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Northwest Indians built canoes that were 50 feet long and 8 feet wide. These were work boats. Each canoe could hold 20 warriors and 10,000 pounds of cargo, such as fish. Smaller boats or single family boats were also made. Canoes were of great importance to Northwest Coastal peoples. They were used for transportation, hunting and fishing. Their perfect hydrodynamic form has a lot in common with the Viking ship. Before a tree could be felled to be made into a canoe, its spirit had to be properly thanked and released to avoid misfortune. Northwest Indian art is full of the "eyes" of the spirits that filled their world watching them at every moment. These eyes can be seen carved into bows of their canoes. Typically a cedar tree was used for the canoe. The tree was cut, then the log was split in half. The middle was then burned and scraped. After a hole was created, they filled the hole with water and added hot rocks until the water boiled. This softened the cedar so that the canoe could be shaped and carved. Image Size: 18 x 23.75 in.
