        Pavel (Tchelitchev) Tchelitchew (Russia / New York, 1898-1957); "Wire Basket & Apples" Oil on Canvas over stretcher signed lower right circa 1928; the reverse with remains of a label for Montparnasse art supply shop owner and art connoisseur Lucien Lefèbvre Foinet Paris VIe; with several customs stamps and framed in an elaborate silver-leaf "old-masters' type frame. Height of art 25 1/2 inches (64.7 cm.) X width of art 21 3/8 inches (54.3 cm.). NOTE: According to James Thrall Soby, one of 6 or 7 still life paintings of fruit on his Montmartre mantel or in a wire basket; see the painting "Pears in a Wire Basket" illustrated in the 1964 Retrospective held at Huntington Hartford's Gallery of Modern Art, NYC, then from the collection of Helena Rubinstein (d, 1965) and again illustrated in Parker Tyler's 1967, "The Divine Comedy of Pavel Tchelitchew" of the same painting now in the collection of Mr & Mrs H J Heintz II. The wire basket becomes more important than the fruit with Tchelitchew's continued exploration of rounded over-lapping lines forming solids.         Pavel TCHELITCHEV. Pyramidal composition. No place or date [ca. 1928-1929]. Oil painting on canvas (50 x 61 cm). Remarkable original painting by Pavel Chelychev. Painter of Russian origin, Pavel Tchelitchev (1898-1957) was also a creator of costumes and sets for the theater. Settled in Paris in 1923, he was linked with René Crevel - whose portrait he made illustrating L'Esprit contre la raison -, Gertrude Stein, Christian Bérard, etc. He worked for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. He emigrated to the United States in the mid-1930s. In the 1940s, he illustrated a few issues of the surrealist magazine View directed by his companion Charles Henri Ford: one issue was devoted to him with Tanguy. (Dictionnaire général du surréalisme et de ses environs, p. 400.) Henriette Gomès gallery label giving as its title "Composition pyramidale" and the notation: "re-entered in 1975." The painting appeared under a different title, Marine, in the exhibition catalog L'Aventure de Pierre Loeb, la Galerie Pierre, 1924-1964 (Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1979, no. 187). Tchelitchew (lower right) pen, brush, sepia ink and wash image size: 31 x 18 cm (12 1/4 x 7 in) Executed circa 1930 PROVENANCE: Zosya Kochanski (Zosya Kochanski was wife of the virtuoso Polish violinist Paul Kochanski, 1887-1934. In 1901, when just 14 years old, the precocious Kochanski had been appointed to be concert master of the nascent Warsaw Philharmonic by the orchestra's founder, Emil Mlynarski. Among the many accolades that he went on to receive, Kochanski was awarded first prize, with the greatest distinction, by the Brussels Conservatoire in 1903. After the war he and Zosya lived briefly in London, where he gave recitals at the Wigmore Hall, before moving to New York, where he made a sensational debut at Carnegie Hall. From 1924 he taught at the Juilliard School, heading the violin faculty until his death from cancer at the age of 46. The couple had been friends with Tchelitchev since the end of the First World War. Tchelitchev painted Zosya's portrait in 1919, his first large scale canvas. with Whitford Fine Art, London

Mat burn along edges, most pronounced across top and upper right edge. Discoloration on verso from cardboard. Needs new mounting and matting. 2. Nurse: Hinged to cardboard upper left and upper right with paper adhesive tape. Also taped at lower left corner to mat with adhesive tape. Signed Tchelitchev and inscribed 42.805 on verso. Pin holes in all four corners. Remnants of old scotch tape [verso]. 3. Mother: Taped with paper adhesive tape across top [recto] to cardboard. Mat stain. Stain from previous tape [verso] .
