In her expertise, Dr Klinge attributes the figures and the dogs to David Teniers the Younger and the landscape to the Flemish landscape painter Jacques d'Arthois. A collaboration between these two artists is attested by numerous works.

We are grateful to Margret Klinge, Düsseldorf, who examined the painting in the original, for her kind support while cataloguing it. David Teniers the Younger is perhaps the Flemish artist of the 17th century who, alongside Peter Paul Rubens, who was a generation older, shaped our view of the art of his time. He learnt his craft in Antwerp from his father, David Teniers the Elder, and became a member of the Guild of St Luke there in 1633. David Teniers II mastered all areas of painting and was extremely innovative and influential. His extensive oeuvre includes portraits, history paintings and religious themes, but he is still particularly popular today as a painter of genre paintings of peasant life. From 1647, the artist, whose works can be found in all the leading collections of his time, was in the service of the governor of the Netherlands and became court painter from 1651. This position also involved looking after the archducal art collection and David Teniers created the first ever illustrated catalogue of the collection with his 'Theatrum pictorium'. His paintings of the archduke's picture rooms, in which he shows the actual objects, are also a completely new and still unrivalled documentation of their time. David Teniers, who maintained a large workshop with pupils, is also regarded as the initiator of the founding of the Antwerp Academy of Arts. Allegorical thematic sequences occur frequently in David Tenier's work. The artist has symbolised the four seasons, the four elements or even the five senses in small-format individual panels. It can be assumed that the small monogrammed panel shown here is part of such a context. The old lady smelling a rose symbolises the sense of smell, which is also the best sense of the dog at her side. Outside, in front of a vast but reduced landscape, she sits on a chair behind which stands the rose bush from which she probably plucked the stems that now lie on her lap. An implied architectural element delimits the pictorial space to the right and lends the scene a certain intimacy. Even without the context of the sensory depiction, the picture is captivating and conveys a quiet melancholy: savouring the scent of the roses, the old lady is perhaps thinking of the past; the faithful dog remains by her side. It is precisely this four-legged friend that also appears in another painting by David Tenier II: in a kitchen interior dated 1644 (now Mauritshuis, The Hague), he stands prominently in the foreground. The Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig has a portrait of an old woman in an armchair (around 1650), which is very similar to the lady in the present painting. This canvas shows a tavern scene with similar morphological characteristics to "The Merry Soldier", a canvas by David Teniers the Younger housed in the Prado Museum. Teniers' production of tavern works is based on that of his master Adriaen Brouwer. Son of David Teniers I, in his youth he remained faithful to his father's style. However, he soon specialized in genre painting, closely linked to the Flemish tradition. In 1638 he joined the Guild of Saint Luke, of which he would later become dean. Among his patrons were the Bishop of Ghent and the Archduke Leopold William. Teniers was also artistic director of the archduke's collection, a position that included not only the conservation of paintings, but also the responsibility of choosing and acquiring new works for what was one of the most important painting collections of the 17th century. Thanks to this, the painter had the opportunity to get to know and study first-hand works by both contemporary and earlier masters, from different schools and genres. In 1651 he moved to Brussels on the occasion of his appointment as court painter, a position he retained with the arrival of the new archduke, John Joseph of Austria. He enjoyed the freedom to work for other patrons, among whom were the greatest art connoisseurs of the 17th century: Christina of Sweden, William II of Orange and Philip IV. Supported by the latter, in 1669 he succeeded in realizing his project to create the Antwerp Academy. His influence reached the 18th century, and his works were part of the collections of the first Bourbons of Spain. His compositions were copied in tapestries that adorned the royal palace of Madrid, giving rise to a genre of great popularity, called "a la Teniers". Works by Teniers are kept in the most important museums of the world, such as the Prado, the Hermitage, the Louvre, the Metropolitan of New York, the National Galleries of London, Washington and Prague, the Rijksmuseum, the Royal Collection of London, the Ashmolean of Oxford, the Poldi Pezzoli of Milan, the Western Art Museum of Tokyo, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, or the Fine Arts Museums of Brussels, Vienna, Antwerp and Dresden.

He was a Flemish artist of great fame among his contemporaries thanks to his scenes of villagers and other common people (peasants, farmers, smokers), which allow us to compare him with Dutch masters such as Adriaen van Ostade, although he opted for a more refined costumbrismo. Another of his specialties was that of painter monkeys, where he showed these animals doing human tasks; theme also known as "macacadas" and "monerías", and called in Europe with the French term singeries. Die Darstellung geht auf die nicht belegte Lebensgeschichte des Heiligen Paulus von Theben (angeblich 228-341) zurück und wird um 376 von Hieronymus in der verfassten „Vita Pauli Primi Eremitae“ überliefert. Demnach ging Paulus während der Christenverfolgungen als erster christlicher Einsiedler und Asket in die ägyptische Wüste. Dort lebte er jahrzehntelang alleine von einer Quelle und einem Raben, der ihm täglich ein halbes Brot brachte. Auf dem Gemälde ist eine hohe fantastische Felsenhöhle zu erkennen, in deren unterem rechten Bereich vor einer einfachen Hütte der Heilige Paulus mit einem Buch sitzt, neben dem Heiligen Antonius (Antonius der Große 251-356), von dem er kurz vor seinem Tod aufgesucht wurde. Paulus weist mit ausgestreckter Hand auf einen fliegenden Raben hin, der ein Brot in seinem Schnabel hält und der durch einen hohen Höhlenausschnitt zu erkennen ist, vor einer weiten Landschaft mit einem Flusslauf, einem Wanderer und einem hohen Rundturm auf einer bergigen Anhöhe. Erzählerische Darstellung in überwiegend beige-brauner Farbigkeit mit gekonnter Hell-Dunkel-Inszenierung. (14114715) (1) (18)

                ÄLTERE DAME IN EINER SCHEUNE MIT KÜCHENUTENSILIEN Öl auf Holz. 42 x 63 cm. Links unten signiert „D TENIERS f“, verso das Brandzeichen der Antwerpener Tafelmacherzunft. Für die Bestätigung der Zuweisung an den genannten Künstler ist Dr. Fred G. Meijer zu danken. Die vorliegende Szene ist ein typisches Beispiel für die Genregemälde des Künstlers, für die er so bekannt ist. Im Inneren einer Scheune eine rechtsseitig sitzende, wohl schlafende Frau in einfacher Kleidung mit weißer Kopfbedeckung und Kragen. Ihr gegenüber, teils stilllebenhaft präsentiert, eine Reihe von prachtvollen Küchen- und Haushaltsobjekten, dazu gehören: ein gold glänzender Kupferkessel, ein übergroßer, ebenfalls glänzender Krug auf einem weißen Tuch in einem Waschbottich, eine Keramik mit Fisch, ein Blasebalg, ein Kohlkopf und Zwiebeln, sowie auf einem Holzblock eine Sanduhr und ein wertvoller Deckelpokal. Das Licht fällt von links in den Raum und hebt diese Objekte, sowie das Gesicht der Frau besonders hervor. Der Reichtum an Ojekten der linken Vorderseite steht in starkem Kontrast zu den zurückhaltenden neutralen Töne der Kleidung der Frau und ihrer Umgebung. In der Mitte des Hintergrundes fällt der Blick durch eine geöffnete Tür in einen weiteren Raum, in dem zwei Männer in angeregter Diskussion sind und sie verweisen zugleich auf Teniers‘ genaue Beobachtung von zeitgenössischen Lebens und menschlichen Ausdrucks. Bekanntlich war Teniers einer der bedeutendsten Erneuerer der Genremalerei seiner Zeit. Neben Genreszenen und religiösen Historien malte er auch Dorflandschaften, beeinflusst von Paul Brill (um 1553/54-1626) und in seinen Berglandschaften vor allem von Joos de Momper d. J. (1564-1635). Besonders bekannt ist er für die Entwicklung des Bauerngenres und Wirtshausdarstellungen. Vielfältig bis weit ins 18. Jahrhundert durch die Druckgrafik verbreitet lassen die Kompositionen Teniers ihn als einen der populärsten Künstler des 17. Jahrhunderts erscheinen, der eine Vielzahl von Nachfolgern fand. David Teniers wichtigster Lehrer war sein Vater David Teniers d. Ä. (1582-1649). Während er im Frühwerk noch in der Art von Adrieaen Brouwer (1605/06-1638) arbeitete, fand er nach dessen Tod seinen eigenen Stil, der bestimmt war durch einen helleren Gesamtton sowie einen gefälligeren Bildaufbau. Ende der 30er-Jahre entwickelt er eine eigene, sehr feintonige Art der Malerei. 1633 wurde er in die Antwerpener Lukasgilde aufgenommen und war 1645 bereits Dekan der Gilde. 1664 begründete er die Antwerpener Akademie.                 Attributed to David Teniers II (Dutch 1610-1690) Tavern Interior with Woman Smoking and Man Drinking, c.1625-90, oil on canvas, signed Teniers on beam table at lower right, framed. Provenance: J. & S. Goldschmidt, Frankfurt, Germany Purchased from the above by Mr. Levi-Hermanos, Paris, January 1927, with original receipt. (Probably Maurice Levi-Hermanos)  By descent in the family of the current owner Accompanied by original letter from Art Historian Max J. Friedlander (German 1867-1958)  stating that in his opinion, the work is by the hand of David Teniers. This work is also pictured in the Max Friedlander Photo archive at RKD Images, although the size noted there is 19.6 x 20 in. During his lifetime Friedlander took photographs of artwork on all of this travels. His personal archive of photographs held approximately 15,000 photos of Netherlandish paintings.  Dimensions: 14 x 20.25 in. canvas size, 22 x 28.5 in. as framed. Condition: Restored in 1990, with conservator's report. The report states that the painting was originally on panel and was transferred to canvas in the 19thc.  Relined, signature overpainted at one time, partially revealed. Under UV light and also visible to the naked eye there is scattered touch up in a general horizontal pattern throughout the picture. There are touch ups to the figure of the smoking woman to the sleeve and bodice of her shirt and extending to her cheek and eye/nose area. Also to the skirt and along the tavern floor, to the jug on the floor at right. There is a pronounced horizontal crease in top 1/3 of painting. Fine pattern of craquelure throughout.

                (1610 Antwerpen - 1690 Brüssel) Umkreis Fischverkäufer und -händler sowie anlandende Fischer in einem Hafen Geschildert wird eine lebendige Hafenszene vor einer mächtigen Befestigungsanlage auf der linken und dem in den Hintergrund gerückten Meer auf der rechten Seite. Dominant im Vordergrund auf der Mole dargestellt wird eine kleine Gruppe aus dem Fischhändler und -verkäufer, die über den Verkauf des fangfrischen Fischs verhandeln, mit ihren Gehilfen, der eine auf das Meer und Fischerboote im Hintergrund deutend, der andere über einem Anker gebeugt stehend. Währenddessen ziehen Fischer ihr Netz ins Boot oder im Wasser an Land. Das Gemälde entstand in der 2. Hälfte des 17. Jhs. wahrscheinlich im näheren Umkreis von Teniers, von dem vergleichbare Fischer- und Hafenszenen bekannt sind. Hierzu zählen u. a. ein vom RKD in Den Haag dokumentiertes Hafenbild mit Fischern aus den 1660er Jahren und eine 1701 in Brüssel gefertigte Tapisserie mit Fischerkai nach einer Vorlage von Teniers im Schloss Mannheim, die einen fast identischen Turm wie beim vorliegenden Gemälde zeigen.                 Measurements: 35 x 30 cm exterior measurements with frame: 50 x 45 cm good condition (Antwerp c 1610-Brussels 1690) Flemish painter Son of David Teniers I he was baptized on December 15 1610 in the church of Saint James in Antwerp In his youth he followed the style of his father and that of Adam Elsheimer but he soon specialized in genre painting in line with the tradition of the Netherlands where the taste for this type of work was greater than in any other country European In 1638 he entered the Guild of Saint Luke of which he would become dean and was soon protected by Antonio Tries bishop of Ghent and later by Archduke Leopold William appointed by Philip IV governor of the States of Flanders Teniers collaborated in the archduke's acquisitions and contributed greatly to the formation of his fabulous art collection acting as its curator Thanks to this the painter had the opportunity to know and study works by different masters centuries schools and genres The cabinet paintings that Teniers made are a valuable instrument for locating the works that the archduke collected as well as a delight for the senses due to their quality and fidelity to the originals In them the painter appears alongside his protector and his friends something unusual and which constitutes a vindication of the dignity of painting similar to what would later appear in Las Meninas In 1651 his appointment as court painter caused him to move to Brussels The previous year he had begun work on the Theatrum Pictoricum illustrated with two hundred and forty-four etchings of Italian paintings by the most prestigious masters of the 15th 16th and 17th centuries a precursor project to the current illustrated catalogues When Leopold William left Flanders to occupy the imperial throne in 1656 this project was interrupted as were the painter's functions at court However the arrival of Leopold's successor Don Juan José of Austria -
