During the Second World War, there was a constant concern in the United States about inappropriate information being overheard or intercepted by enemy agents both domestically and abroad. Saul Tepper (1899-1987) began his career as a typographer for catalogs. He transitioned into a role as a commercial illustrator in the 1930s. Towards the end of his career, Tepper became a songwriter for the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. Vintage 1944 Original WWII "WE CAUGHT HELL!" Poster by Saul Tepper (1899-1987) UNUSED

"We Caught Hell! - Someone Must Have Talked". Image of a soldier carrying a dead or wounded soldier on his back with a firestorm in the background is a brutal scene. This poster is part of the loose lips series and depicts anger and accusation in its message. Tepper started as a letterer for fashion catalogs before becoming an illustrator. Later in life, Tepper became a songwriter and his songs were recorded by Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. Artist Biography: Saul Tepper (1899-1987) was a native New Yorker, born on the Lower East Side, who had a highly successful career as an illustrator in New York City. As a youngster, he was given a correspondence course award at the Landon School of Art, and he also studied at The Cooper Union, the Art Students League, and the Grand Central Art School under illustration artist Harvey Dunn. Tepper's painting, Academic Study of A Man, was probably done around that time. Tepper's characteristic style was realistic, with bold contrasts of light and dark and close attention to detail. He first worked as a letterer in a fashion catalog studio. At the height of his career, he produced illustrations for most of the major magazines of the time such as The Saturday Evening Post, Liberty Magazine, Woman's Home Companion, and American Magazine, as well as advertising art for such major accounts as General Electric, Coca-Cola, General Motors, Mobil and Texaco. New Yorker Saul Tepper's stunning painting was published as an illustration for the first installment of the serialized romance-adventure story "The Tall Ladder" by Katharine Newlin Burt, American Magazine, April 1932. In this particular episode, the protagonist, the feisty East Coast heiress Julia Oliphant, has jumped in her car and headed west to California, hoping to escape her ex-husband and another undesirable suitor. After ditching her chauffer along the way, Julia encounters a handsome bandit, Joe Carr, fleeing from the law near Castle Canon Pass in Oregon. Her adventurous spirit prompts her to help Joe: she disguises him in her chauffer's discarded uniform, and together they simulate a car crash to explain the "death" of the fugitive. When the sheriff of Cayuse County and his posse arrive on the scene, they no longer recognize Joe -- now a disheveled chauffer -- as their wanted man. Tepper's illustration captures the moment "The leader [sheriff], a stout fellow, got out of his saddle and came up to [Julia]. She saw his eyes look searchingly at the chauffer." Compositionally, Tepper uses a panoramic format to underscore the unfolding narrative, and he directs the diagonal lines of the canyon walls to the focal point of Julia and the "chauffer" (Joe), who have just survived a "car crash." Sweeping, energized brushwork heightens the action of the moment, and colorful bandanas draw the viewer's eye to each character in the drama. A masterful renderer of figures, Tepper features costume details, such as tooling on the lawmen's leather belts, and believable facial expressions, from Julia's protective imploring, to the chauffer's feigned disorientation, to the sheriff's agitation.

Discovered in 1970, the posters â€" of which few pristine prints remain with the exception of the National Archives and the Library of Congress â€" were in mint condition, neatly catalogued and folded in brown wrapping paper from grocery stores.
