Waiting For The Lover is a recurring theme in Syed Thajudeen's Lovers repertoire. To him, the love between two humans is the most enthralling and eternal. The artist's talent for expression is evident here through the intricate abstraction of architectural and natural forms and intuitive perception of the landscape. It is a poetic interpretation of universal experiences translated into and endearing composition of love and faith. Born in Alagam Kulamvillage near Madurai, South India, Syed Thajudeen joined his Malaysian-born parents in Penang when he was 11 and stayed on until his lower secondary education. Syed Thajudeen (b. India, 1943) Lightness Of Being, 1999

        Est: RM120,000 - RM150,000

Love is in the air, as always, in the art repertoire of Syed Thajudeen, an incorrigible romantic who’s always sanctifying the eternal bliss of love between a couple. A woman in floral sarong, the muse of Cinta Tercipta, floats in a subterranean realm across two panels of the triptych, with admiring fishes like suitors all over and some even nibbling at parts of her body, like a tender caress. Her long tresses are held up by her hands as if in a doa (prayer) and ritual. The woman is in an ecstatic state of Rasa, a heightened mood of emotional bliss. It’s an utopia incarnate of surreal dimensions with even a pair of fishes kissing and lotus buds lolling like procreating cells. This work was not shown in Syed Thajudeen’s Retrospective exhibition at the Penang State Art Gallery in 2015, but was among the 53 works in the Cinta Tercipta… And There Is Love solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2006, and which was reprised at Pelita Hati Gallery of Art in 2007. Syed Thajudeen was the first Malaysian artist to receive tutelage at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras (1967-1974), at the time of the birth of modern Indian art with groups like the Bengal School, Calcutta School, Bombay Progressives, Progressive Artists Group and Baroda Group and pioneers like Raja Ravi Varma. Among his notable country-selected exhibitions are the Contemporary Paintings of Malaysia (Pasadena, 1988); Rupa Malaysia (London, 1998); Malaysian Art 1965-1978 (London, 1978); World Expo in Shanghai (2010); Olympic Games art exhibition (London, 2012); and the Bangladesh Biennale in 1983.

The lone amorous lover in all coquettish poses is a favourite of Syed Thajudeen in his paeans to love with a pastoral setting. Here, Miss Pucker Lips seems a little anxioius as she waits for her secret lover in this paradisiacal natural settings complete with palm trees, something the belle could hide and hug as in most breadline Bollywood movies complete with songs and dancers. With a massive booty, you half expect the maiden to do some twerking if she’s transported to today, in the US of America perhaps. But a solid bum according to traditionalists is a splendid sign of a great child-bearing receptacle. But Syed Thajudeen’s world is what makes the world go round: Love, sensual and playful with the tree stumps like phallic symbols, heightening the woman’s innermost desires. In Indian mythology, such scenes are often played out as that of the super nova lothario Lord Krishna, who is seldom depicted because he is a divine presence, spending time with his purported harem of Gopis or if only one, his consort Radha. Syed Thajudeen’s tutelage at the Government College of Arts and Crafts (1967-1974) was at a time of the most seminal changes in art in India. Born in Alagam Kulamvillage near Madurai, South India, he joined his Malaysian-born parents in Penang at the age of 11, but returned to Madras for his studies. He had a brief teaching job before becoming a resident designer in a bank for the rest of his working life. In 2015, the Penang State Art Gallery honoured him with a Retrospective, rounding up a career that started with his first solo held there in 1975, a gap of 40 years. Syed Thajudeen’s importance saw him being selected for several travelling national exhibitions like the Bangladesh Biennale in 1983; the Contemporary Paintings of Malaysia in Pasadena, the United States, in 1988; and the Olympic Games art show in London in 2012. 125 x 125cm

‘Waiting For The Lover’ is a recurrent theme in Syed Thajudeen Shaik Abu Talib’s repertoire. It’s a modern-day replay of the deity-cowherd Krishna’s pastoral romance in Hindu folklore, with a local setting of the lovelorn female love, his consort Radha, clad in baju kebaya, accentuating the body curves. Sensuality is one of the two major strands in Syed Thajudeen’s themes, the other related to historical epics. Here, the female protagonist in a low-cut blouse strikes a sexy pose with the anticipation of the return of her lover. The soft pastel pink-yellowish hues of the background enhances the mood.Born in Alagam Kulamvillage near Madurai, South India, Syed Thajudeen rejoined her Malaysian-born parents in Penang when he was 11. Waiting For The Lover is a recurring theme in Syed Thajudeen’s Lovers repertoire. To him, the love between two humans of the opposite sex, is the most enthralling and eternal. The picture is dominated by a solitary woman in a bright off-shoulder dress in the natural open at night. Something sensual is suggested in the erotic bud-like blooms in the bottom green rectangle and the three-fig clover, with the pun on lover perhaps. A bird stands guard on the left while the woman raises her right hand, apparently guiding her unseen lover to where she is, in what looks like a secret rendezvous.Born in Alagam Kulamvillage near Madurai, South India, Syed Thajudeen joined her Malaysian-born parents in Penang when he was 11 and stayed on until his lower secondary education. SYED THAJUDEEN (B. India, 1943) Male Energy, 2001 Oil on canvas

        Est: RM3,500 - RM5,500

At first glance, this piece undoubtedly emanates a mood that is a mixture between sensuality and biology. Syed’s unique style and aesthetic sense draw inspiration from the Bauhaus art of Paul Klee and his Indian education background fused with Malay cultural elements. A distinctive stylisation, romantic treatment of subject matter and the rich colours as in the Ajanta cave paintings of Maharasthra and of the Mughal (enriched from the wealth of Indian mythology) are apparent in his works. His works, as individualistic as they are, attempt to evoke a state of rasa, or heightened mood that belongs to a larger tapestry and sensibility of Asian artistic traditions. In many instances where his favourite subject matters deal with women and love, they share the same archetypal symbols and metaphors.

        Est: RM3,000 - RM7,000

Convoluted in technique yet simple in its message – this describes perfectly the work that is presented here. Syed Thajudeen’s works known to be romantic, lyrical and spiritual to a point are no different than this one. He sketches love, or rather a longing for it. Capturing his subject (with the distinguishable eyes and lips amidst the chaos), with her head dipped in a shy manner, and a shawl wrapped loosely around her shoulders, she patiently waits for her lover. This ink-on-paper work, otherwordly and glorious, catches your attention for long moments, willing you to come by and dissect the true meaning of it as well as explore the artistry that effectually created this masterpiece. Syed Thajudeen was born Syed Thajudeen Shaik Abu Talib and is known as one of the best poetic artists in the Malaysian art industry. Initially sent to study medicine in India, the fire he had for art could not be distinguished. Convincing his parents to let him study art, he eventually attended the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras. His works are exhibited by Galeri PETRONAS, the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and the Singapore Art Museum.

SYED THAJUDEEN b. India, 1943 LONGING FOR LOVE, 1991 Signed and dated 'Syed Thajudeen 91' (lower right) Oil on canvas 87cm x 87cm Longing For Love illustrates a stylistic female figure reclining on a golden bedrock encircled in delicate plants and flowers. The notion of romance is represented by the colour of passion, red and imaginatively executed in a dreamlike psychedelic manner. Syed Thajudeen's personal Indian background and Indian traditional painting styles fused with Malay cultural elements create his own unique style and an aesthetic sense drawn from these inspirations. In the artist's biography, the following excerpt describes his stylistic endeavour : A distinctive stylisation, romantic treatment of subject matter and the rich colours as in the Ajanta cave paintings of Maharasthra and of the Mughal (enriched from the wealth of Indian mythology) are apparent in his works. This, together with the traditional visual arts' integral connection with literature, music, dance, sculpture and philosophy, helped shape Syed's early works. His works, as individualistic as they are, attempt to evoke a state of rasa, or heightened mood that belongs to a larger tapestry and sensibility of Asian artistic traditions. In many instances where his favourite subject matters deal with women and love, they share the same archetypal symbols and metaphors. Born in Alagan Kulam, a village close to the temple city of Madurai, South India, where his Malaysian-born parents lived during the Second World War Syed Thajudeen joined his family in Penang when he was eleven years old but later went back to India to pursue a course in art at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras (1967 - 1974). He obtained a Diploma in painting in 1973 and a Post-Diploma in painting in 1974. He held his first solo exhibition in 1975 at Museum and Gallery, Penang followed by a second solo exhibition in the same year at Samat Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur. His other solo shows included Seroja: An Exhibition of Oil Paintings and Ink Drawings by Syed Thajudeen (2002); Love and Its Many Splendoured Images - Paintings by Syed Thajudeen (2004); Cinta Tercipta...And There is Love (2006 & 2007); Women in Kebaya: A Tribute to Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood (2007) and Paintings on Love (2010). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions locally and internationally namely Malaysian Art 1965 - 1978 at the Commonwealth Institute in London (1978); Second Bangladesh Art Biennale (1983); Contemporary Painting of Malaysia, Pasadena, United States of America (1988); Malaysian Painting in Cologne, Germany (1990); Man and Spirituality at National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (1995) and Olympic Games Art Exhibition in London, United Kingdom (2012) to name a few.
