CONTACT US SKU#: 117908 US Shipping $60 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: A watercolorist and etcher, John Theiss was born in Zelienople, Pennsylvania on September 20, 1863. Theiss received a degree from Concordia College in Fort Wayne, IN in 1882 and graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in St Louis in 1886. He was a Lutheran minister in Madisonville, OH (1886-89), Portland, OR (1889-93), and Santa Rosa, CA (1894-1904).Theiss began painting in 1901 and remained a self-taught artist except for ten lessons with Lorenzo Latimer and criticism from Antony Anderson. He painted landscapes of the Sonoma Hills and Yosemite until 1904 when he moved to Los Angeles into a studio-home at 1308 E. 46th Street.Active in southern California until the mid-1920s, he married Theodora Stumpf of Springfield, OH in 1925 and settled there. Theiss was the subject of a lunacy hearing in Clark County (Ohio) in 1930.He died in Springfield on March 3, 1932.He was the author of German Lyrics, Gepflueckt Am Wege (1897), In der Feierstunde (1907), Anthology of German Lyrics (1913), Heimwaerts (1922), and California Sketches (1935).He was a member of the LA Painters Club and Springfield Art League.
