Some colours are particularly attractive to me. Those yellow tones, those warm ochre tones, red, muted red – these are colours which clearly play a great role with me. Music, in which I love to indulge, is played for me in these tones. […] I often work with blue outlines. Blue is sort of a handwriting that goes across the picture to emphasize something. I feel this to be beautiful. […] In Bali everything has a cosmic significance. The mountain is high, and is frequently in the clouds, and these are blue and also black, according to the Balinese. Brahma is red, warm as fire. The Sun is yellow; between red and gold, and the Sun is Life.’ (Theo Meier, in: Wenk, 1980, pp. 29-30)The above quotes tell us a lot about Theo Meier, his painting style and his inspirations.Born in Basle, Switzerland, in 1908, Theo Meier attended the local Fine Art Academy in 1928. A year later, he went to Berlin and Dresden, where he met Max Liebermann, Karl Hofer, Otto Dix, and Emil Nolde. The latter had been part of Die Brücke, a community of expressionist painters. Meier was directly influenced by them, especially Otto Dix (1891-1969). Apart from that, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) greatly inspired Theo Meier’s travelling ambitions and especially the way Meier’s painting style evolved. After having attended an exhibition in Basle of Gauguin’s work, Meier decided to visit Tahiti in 1932, but went back to Europe in 1934. In 1936, Meier traveled to the tropics once more, this time to Bali. He first settled in Sanur, but six years later he moved to Iseh, near Gunung Agung. The tropical light and the symbolism of colour in Balinese culture must have influenced the way Theo Meier expressed himself onto canvas. On a less artistic level, Theo Meier had a penchant for alcohol, leading him to often be intoxicated while painting, which to a certain extent must have had an artistic effect on his paintings too. In 1956, he returned to Basle, and a year later moved to Thailand, where he would live until 1981. After a most productive life, Theo Meier passed away in Berne, Switzerland, in 1982.‘Meier paints in his pictures an atmosphere from which repose, something peaceful, an echo of paradisiacal perception, emerges. […] Many of his portraits can be regarded as pieces of still-life. […] The majority of his faces are motionless, silent and beautiful, in internal and external harmony with circumambient Nature.’ (ibid., pp. 22-23)The current lot portrays a young girl, Ni Made Mulugan. In 1938, only one year after having made this portrait, Theo Meier and Ni Mulugan got married. She is depicted carrying offerings in a bowl (dulang), which is covered with a lid made out of lontar leaves, a so-called saab. While the pink scarf around her neck (senteng or salayer) seems merely decorative, it essentially proves to be quite practical, serving to cover Mulugan’s breasts whenever she would visit a temple. The wooden pavilion (bale) in the background completes the narrative of the girl being on her way to a Balinese temple complex. Apart from the pink scarf, Mulugan is adorned with a headdress of flowers (bando), bracelets (gelang kala) around her upper arms, and the typical subeng earplugs from either lontar palm leaves or gilt silver, depending on caste and marital status.In 1937, the island of Bali was still a paradise, with its inhabitants, tourists, and artists harmoniously living a care-free life. However, in February 1942, six years after Theo Meier’s first arrival on Bali, the Japanese army invaded the Island of the Gods; Bali was engulfed in World War II, and Theo Meier would also suffer the consequences. ‘His paintings could not escape the effects of the brutal military attitude. Portraiture of the female nude had been strictly prohibited by the military; many were most probably destroyed, while other works were torn up to be used as rags, card tables or parasols. Almost six years of his work was destroyed.’ (Hamel, 2007, p. 78)The current painting can thus be regarded a rare example of a pre-war Balinese oil on canvas, which survived the destructive forces of war. Theo Meier (1908-1982) Thai Dancer, signed and dated 'Theo Meier / 63' (lower right) oil on canvas 86 x 72cm Theo Meier's life was a vibrant odyssey, spanning from Switzerland to the South Pacific - notably, Bali and Thailand. Born in Basel in 1908, Meier initially pursued a commercial apprenticeship, but soon embraced his desire for true artistic and geographic autonomy. Meiers breakthrough came with a portrait commission for the University of Basel, which led to subsequent commissions from a parade of prominent patrons. Inspired by the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the primitivism of Gauguin, at aged twenty four, Meier embarked on a transformative journey to the South Pacific. Financing his expedition through an unusual business in which his clients pledged monthly sums in exchange for one of his paintings upon his return, he explored Tahiti and Bali. Whilst Tahiti provided a vibrant tropical palette, it lacked the cultural depth Meier sought. Venturing further west, in Bali he encountered what he considered to be the perfect mixture of culture, beauty and community. Before long, the island became his muse and daily inspiration. Enjoying the patronage of Sukarno, Indonesia's first President, Meier continued to paint the people and landscapes of Bali for 15 years, before briefly returning to Switzerland. Pining for his adopted hemisphere, in 1957 Meier journeyed to Thailand where he met his wife, Laiad, and settled in Chiang Mai. Unlike many of his peers, Meiers cultural familiarity, coupled with his dogged pursuit of artistic exploration, allowed him to transcend superficial exoticism and capture the essence of his Thai and Balinese subjects.

Theo Meier derived inspiration from the people and rich cultural traditions of Bali. The present lot titled Study Portrait Of Bang was finely painted using oil on panel. It embodies the ideals of classic female beauty with expressive round eyes and dark tousled waves. His spontaneous brushstrokes and light touch capture the persona and inner emotions of the elegant sitter. Born in Switzerland in 1908, Theo Meier attended the Basel School of Art, a local art academy in 1928. He later continued his studies in Berlin and Dresden, where he met artists Max Liebermann, Karl Hofer, Otto Dix, and Emil Nolde. Theo Meier admired the symbolic works of Paul Gauguin and made a visit to Tahiti in 1932. He later decided to settle down in Bali c.1936, where his practice was shaped by the local culture and tropical landscapes. In 1957, he moved to Thailand, but would travel back to Bali annually.
