JORGE MANUEL THEOTOCÓPULI (Toledo, 1578- 1631). "St. Francis of Assisi. Oil on canvas. Relined. It has a label on the back. Attached report issued by Don J. M. Quesada. Measurements: 106.5 x 81 cm; 125 x 100 cm (frame). Aesthetically this work follows the models of the painting attributed to the circle of El Greco that belongs to the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, Donation Antonio Santamarina in 1975. The piece represents St. Francis of Assisi in profile to the viewer, completely inserted in prayer, as he directs his face towards the crucifix in the upper area. Both the use of a dark color palette reduced to very few tones that dominates the whole scene, as well as the scarcity of elements deliberately portrayed by the author, show us his interest in the symbolism and the message he wants to convey to the faithful. As for the model, it should be noted that El Greco resorted to this theme on numerous occasions, the first time being around 1577. Finally, the most popular model was the one on which this painting is based, which was widely reproduced by his disciples. In this particular case it is worth mentioning that the stylized canon of the protagonist of the scene and the palette used bring us aesthetically close to the work of Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli, son of the famous El Greco. Jorge Manuel was artistically trained in his father's workshop, where he worked until his father's death. Nov. 29, 2023

Very Important Christ on Mount Golgotha, Toledo school of the Theotocópuli, Domenikos and Jorge Manuel (Toledo, 1578-Toledo, 1631), Spanish school of the late 16th century - early 17th century

      Est: €30,000 - €35,000

Impactful representation of careful scenography, sobriety and meditation clearly framed in the Toledo or Madrid Late Mannerist school and models very close to Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli (Toledo, 1578-Toledo, 1631), where we identify Christ on the Cross on Mount Golgotha in his last breath before passing into Eternal Life and resurrecting. Next to him, Dimas and Gestas, the two thieves who were executed along with the Son of Man. We identify Gestas to the right of Christ, repentant at the end of his life for the misdeeds he had committed, and Dimas with the one to the left of him, who turns on the cross in a grotesque and extravagant position, a symbol of his own tormented conscience of him. Even the fact of presenting a red-haired character, like Cain and Judas, is traditionally the representation of evil. Ex-sevillian private collection.

Oil on canvas, measurements: 91 x 80 cm, measurements with frame 106 x 95 cm. Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli (Toledo, 1578-Toledo, 1631) was a Spanish painter and architect, apparently he was the only natural son of the well-known painter Domenikos Theotocópoulos, "El Greco". He learned the profession of painter working in his father's workshop, since from 1603 his participation in his father's commission for the Illescas altarpieces is documented. A little later, in 1607, he began to create independent works, such as the Titulcia altarpiece, where, although he followed the mannerism of his father, a personal style began to emerge, although his quality as a painter was always notably lower than that of the great Cretan teacher After the death of his father, in 1614, Jorge Manuel focused his interests on architecture, where he followed the Herrerian school with Nicolás de Vergara el Mozo and Juan Bautista Monegro. Between 1612 and 1618 he participated in the completion of the construction of the Town Hall of Toledo. Later, in 1625, he obtained the position of senior master, sculptor and architect of the Cathedral of Toledo, where he worked on the construction of the Ochavo chapel and on the dome of the Mozarabic chapel of Enrique Egas. Married twice, he ended up ruined due to a dispute with the Tavera Hospital, in which his assets were seized. Est: €18,000 - €20,000

Attributed to JORGE MANUEL THEOTOCÓPULI (Toledo, 1578-ibidem, 1631), "Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata. Oil on canvas. Size: 87 x 66 cm; 111 x 90 cm (frame). The so-called "Stigmatisation" took place in September 1224, on Mount Alvernia. Saint Francis decided to have a hut built to isolate himself on that mountain, praying, with Friar Leon bringing him bread and water, a brother who witnessed several miracles, among which the one related in this work stands out. According to St Bonaventure's account, the crucified Nazarene appeared to him, surrounded by six angelic wings, impressing on the saint the signs of the Crucifixion on his hands, feet and side, wounds that he would keep for the rest of his life, trying to hide them from the public eye. Saint Francis (Assisi, Italy, 1182 - 1226) was the son of a wealthy Italian merchant. Baptised John, he soon became known as "Francesco" (the little Frenchman), because his mother came from that country. His youth was joyful and carefree until the age of twenty-five, when he changed completely and began to dedicate himself to the service of God, practising the Gospel ideal: purity, detachment and joy in peace. Francesco renounced the great inheritance he had received from his parents and decided to live poorly, giving the example of an authentic Christian. He soon had several young disciples, called by the saint "order of the Friars Minor". In 1210, Pope Innocent III granted them the foundation of the new order and encouraged them in their evangelical work. During a retreat on the mountain, Christ appeared to him, and legend has it that rays came out of his wounds, causing Francis various stigmata. He was a legendary figure during his lifetime, considered a living relic. His exquisite poetry and his familiarity with nature add the most human accent known in a saint, as can be seen in his "Canticle to the Sun". The stylised canon of the protagonist of the scene and the palette used bring us aesthetically close to the work of Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli, son of the famous El Greco. Jorge Manuel trained artistically in his father's studio, where he worked until his father's death. Although it is true that throughout his career he was involved in other projects on his own as an architect and painter. His pictorial work was distinguished by the fact that it continued his father's aesthetic precepts. However, he was particularly outstanding in the field of architecture; he designed the Toledo Town Hall building and was also ordained master builder of the cathedral.
