Wayne Thiebaud Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1920 -

American artist Wayne Thiebaud briefly worked for Walt Disney studios as an animator and wrote a comic strip while in the Air Force. In 1956, he moved to New York where his interests shifted, and Wayne Thiebaud's paintings reflected the influence of the Abstract Expressionist art movement of the time. Wayne Thiebaud's abstract paintings focused on light and shadow, distinct edges, and the eclectic patterns he created using richly pigmented oil paints.

Wayne Thiebaud's art for sale includes earlier whimsical paintings he did of children’s toys, gumball machines, and jukeboxes. Cityscapes, emboldened landscapes, and the hills of San Francisco became the primary focus of Wayne Thiebaud's abstract paintings when he settled there in 1972. Purchase unique abstract paintings for sale online at Invaluable that satisfy your need for unconventional expression.

    Dec. 21, 2024

AMERICAN GOUACHE PAINTING ATTR TO WAYNE THIEBAUD

    Est: $100 - $150

Attributed to Morton Wayne Thiebaud, American, 1920 to 2021, gouache painting over print on board depicting a still life with a bottle, 1961. Signed and dated, upper right. Framed. Wayne Thiebaud was an American painter known for his colorful works depicting commonplace objects pies, cakes, lipsticks, paint cans, ice cream cones, pastries, and hot dogs as well as for his landscapes and figure paintings. Thiebaud is associated with the pop art movement because of his interest in objects of mass culture, although his early works, executed during the fifties and sixties, slightly predate the works of the classic pop artists. Thiebaud used heavy pigment and exaggerated colors to depict his subjects, and the well-defined shadows characteristic of advertisements were almost always included in his work. Modern and Contemporary American Fine Art, Pop Art Paintings, and Collectibles. One of a kind artwork.

The city's plunging hills, strict formality of the buildings, sidewalks, and even road markings are visible in the artist's exacting delineation of objects and space. Thiebaud's approach upends conventional perspective, creating swells and inclines on the cusp between abstraction and representation. His resourceful use of light and shadow on the vertical street, rendered with a painterly realism and gravity-defying manipulation of space, demonstrates his determination to usurp conventional observation as he creates a viewing experience that plays with both the audience's sense of position and frame of reference.
