        Thiele, Otto: Beim Abendbrot

        Est: €1,000 - €1,200

Otto Thiele (1870-1955), 'Berlin Flower Market Hall', c. 1920

        Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Oil on canvas Germany, Berlin, around 1920 Otto Thiele (1870-1955) - German painter Signed lower right 'Otto Thiele' Overall dimensions, framed : 93.5 x 77 cm; stretcher frame : 65 x 80 cm Provenance: German private collection Berlin flower markets are Thiele's preferred subject matter and also the most sought-after ones by collectors; these painting fetch more than 17,000 euros at international auctions The famous painter Max Liebermann once said about a painting by Otto Thiele (1870-1955) showing the 'Berlin Flower Market Hall': 'I wish I had created this painting'. Like the painting mentioned by Liebermann, Thiele has also executed this oil painting in a skilled Impressionist manner. It is a characteristic work by the artist, who painted the subject of the flower market in numerous versions. The thick paint layers, sometimes dabbed and sometimes plane, result in a sea of colourful flowers, taking shape the more the viewer steps away from the painting. It is exactly the changing of decomposition and becoming of forms, which Is particularly charming in this painting. Also, the light-dark contrasts - triggered by the glass windows of the market hall - are a key parameter of this work. The isolated flower vendors and market goers merge with the sea of flowers. The flowers certainly are the protagonists of this painting. A student of Lovis Corinth, Otto Thiele studied the principles of Impressionism at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. The painting is signed lower right 'Otto Thiele'. The painting is optically in very good condition, showing only minimal signs of age. At the back, two small cracks have been restored with canvas. At these points, the paint surface shows minimal, barely visible touch-ups. The canvas was reinforced on the edges. The colour surface shows slight craquelure. The plain wooden frame with gesso-silvering is in good condition, featuring only a few small chips. The overall dimensions, framed, are 93.5 x 77 cm. The stretcher frame measures 65 x 80 cm. Otto Thiele (1870-1955) A native of Pomerania, Otto Thiele (1870-1955) began a training with the German Post at the age of 18, while he privately dealt with the visual arts.
