    The work of the painter Daniel Jansz Thievaert has not yet been sufficiently studied. He is therefore an artist whose best unsigned works are often attributed to other painters - for example, the great painting "Queen of Sheba before Solomon" in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Although signed it was for a long time thought to be the work of Jacob de Wet. Werner Sumowski has brought to light more than a dozen works by Thievaert and traced his artistic development from a painter of small history paintings in the manner of Jacob de Wet and Willem de Poorter to a painter of monumental figural compositions. Among these paintings is one of his most important works "Levite and his concubine in Gibeah" in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Our painting is considered to be, by Sumowski, a precursor to this major work. Similarities can be observed in the colour palette, depiction of drapery and types of figures. The ability to attribute both paintings to the same hand can be further proven through the similar depiction of heads, the clothes of the figures and the buildings in the background along with the clouds over the landscape and the still life in the foreground.
