      Jul. 18, 2023

Exposition de Blanc / Place Clichy. 1898.

      Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: HENRI THIRIET (1866-1897) SIZE: 51 1/4 x 36 in./130.2 x 91.5 cm PRINTER: Imp. de Vaugirard, Paris DESCRIPTION: “A saleswoman at the Place Clichy White Sale shows a discerning customer some fine bed linens. Thiriet makes the women’s appearances and attitudes so charming and gives the sheets themselves such sumptuous volumes that purchasing what is essentially a household requirement seems as delightful as choosing a new dress” (Gold, p. 18). Crauzat, announcing its publication in L’Estampe et l’Affiche, calls it “a beautiful design with pleasing colors. We hope that it will be followed by many more [from the artist]” (1898, p. 43). Pleasing colors might be an understatement in this case—this poster boasts incredibly vivid colors: tangerine lettering and accents, burgundy and turquoise apparel, and the strangest—but most delightful—scarlet hair. • Original 1898 Poster by Thiriet - Exposition de Blanc a La Place Clichy
      Feb. 24, 2021

Original 1898 Poster by Thiriet - Exposition de Blanc a La Place Clichy

      Est: $5,000 - $6,000

The Exposition de Blanc image was created by the French artist, Henri Thiriet (1866 - 1897) and printed in 1898. A La Place Clichy was a Department Store located at the intersection of Rues d'Amsterdam and St. Petersbourg in Paris. The store promoted itself in its early advertising as a merchant with great values for its clients. This particular image was designed to publicize an exposition of linens and tablecloths, i.e. a White Sale. In it we see the elegant shopper being shown a part of the selection available at A La Place Clichy. The horizontal format of this poster makes it even more attractive in today's decorating style. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

    • L’Affiche Française. 1897.
      Jul. 21, 2020

      L’Affiche Française. 1897.

      Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: HENRI THIRIET (1866-1897) SIZE: 19 1/4 x 25 1/4 in./49 x 64 cm PRINTER: Imp. Bourgerie & Cie, Paris DESCRIPTION: An allegorical figure representing “L’Affiche Française” sits on the banks of the Seine, thumbing through an album apparently containing a “Who’s Who” of French posterists, as the list on the right would seem to indicate. It is unclear, however, if this poster was for a publication or an exhibition. That said, with the silhouette of Notre Dame de Paris standing watch in the shimmering gold background, this is one of Thiriet’s more subtly dramatic designs. (Art Nouveau; Posters on Posters)

ARTIST: HENRI THIRIET (1873-1946) SIZE: 38 5/8 x 55 3/8 in./98 x 140.7 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Thiriet’s posters are few, but all are excellent. “This is yet another example of the Art Nouveau poster at its stylized best. The composition has been meticulously—almost geometrically—arranged, and the influence of mythology, in both the Greek name for the bicycle brand of Kreutzberger and the winged goddess, plus the bold use of flat and vibrant colors emphasize this. The Omega is chainless (“Sans Chaine”) even though continuous-chain-driven bicycles were being produced at this time. It worked by means of bevel gears” (Bicycle Posters, p. 9).
