Notation: Signed and dated lower left: Thöming fec: 1837. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Verso: On the canvas stamp of the London Artists' Supply Roberson & Miller. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Already during his training as a lithographer and his time at the Copenhagen Academy of Art, seascapes and coastal landscapes frequently appeared in the works of Friedrich Thöming. It is therefore hardly surprising that the artist, born in the port city of Eckernförde, moved to Italy in the 1820s. He spent his summers at the Neapolitan coast gathering inspiration, which he poured into his paintings in meticulous manner during winters in Rome. The canvas shows the Bay of Naples, a popular motif in Thömings body of work. What stands out is the moment he chooses to portray: the background and right half of the painting are dominated by foaming waves crashing against the rocks in intense blue tones. The spray in the foreground, depicted in golden sunlight and reminiscent of works by important marine painters - such as Claude Lorrain - already indicates a change in the weather. Today the whereabouts of only around 30 works by the artist, who was supported by Bertel Thorvaldsen among others, are known. This piece is thus not only an atmospheric snapshot of the coast of southern Italy, it is also a noteworthy addition to the oeuvre of the marine painter Thöming.
