A near pair of George II sterling silver sauceboats, London 1742, by Thomas Gilpin Of oval form with shaped rim, double C scroll handle, raised on three differing shell feet with shell junction knees, the sides contemporarily engraved with coat of arms and a crest of a Griffin’s head erased. The underside the lips with later initials AR in cursive script within a garter ribbon surmounted by an Earl’s coronet. Marked underneath. (2) Length – 22.2 cm/8.7 inches Weight – 972 grams/31.2 ozt £600-800 The initials, coronet and Garter ribbon are that of Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Roseberry (1847-1929), who was Prime Minister between 5 March 1894 to 22 June 1895.
