Provenance: - Ira Stehmann, Munich. "Erst seit dem 14. Jahrhundert wird die Beweinung Christi in der nördlichen Malerei dargestellt. Wichtigste Aufgabe dieses Bildmotivs war die Vermittlung der compassio, dem einfühlenden Mitleiden mit der Trauer der Angehörigen. Jan de Bray wählt eine Kompositionsform, die es dem andächtigen Betrachter auch durch seine Position erlaubt, sich formal in den Kreis der Figuren einzufügen und so unmittelbar am Geschehen teilzuhaben. Mit brutaler Detailgenauigkeit wiedergegeben, liegt der zu Tode gemarterte Körper auf einem weißen Tuch umgeben von Engeln und Trauernden. Sanft umfassen sie seine Gestalt: vom Haupt, das in den Schoß Mariens gebettet liegt, bis zu den Füßen, an denen Maria Magdalena sitzt. Die leblose Hand wird sacht von einem Engel umfangen. Auf dem Boden im Bildvordergrund liegen die blutigen Nägel. Sie schaffen sowohl kompositorisch als auch inhaltlich eine Bezugnahme zum Hintergrund des Gemäldes, wo die Hinrichtungsstätte mit den drei Kreuzen zu sehen ist. Jan de Bray erzählt die Komplexität der Passionsgeschichte Jesu auf eindringliche und doch künstlerisch ausgefeilte Weise. Der Münchner Künstler Christopher Thomas hingegen ist ein Meister der Reduktion. Die vorliegende Fotografie der zu Boden gesunkenen, komplett verhüllten Figur, entstammt einer Serie von knapp 60 Aufnahmen, die die Passion Christi zeigen. Sie entstanden während der wochenlangen Proben zu den nur alle 10 Jahre stattfindenden Festspielen in Oberammergau. Die 55. Fotografie stellt die in das blutverschmierte Leichentuch weinende Maria Magdalena dar. Die stoffliche Verbindung des Leintuchs mit dem Gewand der Frau liest sich wie eine Metapher für ihre sich völlig mit dem Leiden Christi identifizierende, physische Trauer. Monumental, konzentriert und in seiner klaren Gestik sofort verständlich, kulminiert das gesamte Passionsgeschehen in einer einzigen menschlichen Gestalt. Wählte de Bray im 17. Jahrhundert eine für seine Zeitgenossen verständliche Ikonografie, so entfaltet Christopher Thomas beim heutigen Betrachter mit modernen Mitteln die gleiche Wirkung der compassio."
