          Clara Fargo Thomas Art Deco Dressing Table

          Clara Fargo Thomas (American, 1891-1970) Art Deco Persian style paint decorated dressing or work table, circa late 1920's, decorated with interior scenes and the interior with items, the top opens to reveal a mirror and numerous storage compartments and sliding panels. Label attached on back from an Architectural League of New York Annual Exhibition, likely from the late 1920's, along with the artist name and title of the piece: "Dressing Table - Persian Motifs". Note: Clara Fargo Thomas was a well known socialite, muralist and painter, and the heiress to the Wells Fargo fortune. She created murals for Vincent Astor and Percy A. Rockefeller, for The Chicago Tribune Building, and for the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. She also produced a 70 feet long mural titled “The Pageant of Beauty” in 1935, for Elizabeth Arden's country home. 29” H x 22.5” W x 19.5” D

A little girl clutches the skirts of her mother, who is otherwise engaged in a telephone conversation. 10 x 7”. Light surface wear. Provenance: From the estate of Clara Fargo Thomas. Clara Fargo Thomas’s art career began during her first pregnancy, during a period of “confinement” in which she chose to decorate her baby’s nursery with a full scale mural depicting dreamlike hunting scenes of animals being chased by hounds. Thus began an art career which would see her creating murals for the Chicago Tribune Building, businesswoman Elizabeth Arden, the Grosvenor House in London, and the New York offices of Vincent Astor and of Percy A. Rockefeller.

          "Spring on the Seine", oil on panel, signed and titled verso in the artist's hand, housed in a gold painted Victorian deep cove gesso frame, OS: 24" x 32", SS: 15 1/2" x 23 1/2". Good condition. Clara Thomas was a well known muralist who traveled in society circles in the 1920s-30s, decorating houses of the rich in New York, New Jersey and Maine, and offices of Cunard and other great NYC retail stores.
