Illustrated: Committed to Memory: The Art of the Slave Ship Icon, Cheryl Finley, Princeton University Press, New Jersey, p. 190, another impression. Pairing marketing and historical imagery, Hank Willis Thomas delivers a searing critique of American capitalism and questions how the nation drew its wealth. Here Thomas repurposes the imagery of the Escaped Slave Gordon Carte de Visite, known as Nelson O Heppamy, a 1790-91 English diagram of a slave ship from the Atlantic slave trade, and images from the broadside prints of iron masks, collar, leg shackles and spurs used to restrict slaves created by Samuel Wood in 1807. With this historical montage, Thomas presents the foundations of American commerce and its inextricable links to slavery. Consigned to support the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.

Provenance: Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, with the gallery label on the frame back; projects+gallery, St. Louis; private collection, Connecticut. Exhibited: Transparency Shade: Seeing Through the Shadow, projects+gallery, St. Louis, MO, April 7 - May 27, 2017. Resting is an example of Hank Willis Thomas's series of unique works based on photographs from the civil rights era. Thomas's practice has been a discourse about appropriating and re-contextualizing of images from both popular culture and historical sources. In this series, Thomas deftly inserts representative images of great political and social meaning into the previous domain of non-objective art. In Resting. he introduces an informal image of the leaders of the infamous Selma March of 1965 into a floating metallic color field of reflection and light. The photographic image includes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King and John Lewis, and was originally taken by The Birmingham News photographer Spider Martin.

Hank Willis Thomas, b. 1976, Breakfast of Champions

        Est: $500 - $1,000

Hank Willis Thomas b. 1976 Breakfast of Champions 2009 in collaboration with Ryan Alexiev color print produced by Cereal Art in an edition of 1000 32 x 24 inches from Ryan Alexiev: "Breakfast of Champion" comments on the iconization and consumerization of the President of the United States. The piece appropriates the religious imagery of Byzantine mosaics to create a sugar cereal image of President Obama. Does the election of Barack Obama symbolize a victory of substance over cynicism or of packaging over product? The mosaic proposes the question: "Is Barack Obama a modern messiah in the world of politics or marketing? Perhaps he is both. Only time will tell. Underneath the glossy surface of the piece is the artists' attempt to understand how to critique and question something they too are seduced by. (An idea we were trying to get at) - The sugary sweet mosaic, made of thousands of cereal bits, depicts idea of what a healthily balanced breakfast (democracy) might look like when considering the role that marketing plays in myth building around corporate and political brands.

HANK WILLIS THOMAS (1976 - ) Negroes to be Sold.

        Est: $6,000 - $9,000

HANK WILLIS THOMAS (1976 - ) Negroes to be Sold. Laser-cut relief on handmade paper, 2009. 622x431 mm; 24 1/2x17 inches. Signed, dated and numbered 16/30 in pencil, lower margin. Printed at the Brandywine Workshop, Philadelphia. Negroes to Be Sold parallels 18th-century enslaved persons advertisements, specifically one from Charleston, South Carolina, on April 26, 1760. Thomas uses the familiar silhouettes of Shaquille O'Neal and Michael Jackson to portray enslaved bodies, expressing the duality of past and present as well as enslavement and success. The artist raises questions about the history of slavery, and the continued commodification of Black bodies. Other impressions are in the collections of the museums of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design.
