  • John Thomas Signature Together with Artemas Ward Autograph Letter Signed. Two i
    Nov. 10, 2022

John Thomas Signature Together with Artemas Ward Autograph Letter Signed. Two i

    Est: $720 - $1,080

John Thomas Signature Together with Artemas Ward Autograph Letter Signed.  Two items signed by two of George Washington's most revered generals during the American Revolution. Includes: John Thomas Signature ("Jno Thomas"). One partial page, 4.625" x 1.375", no place; 1761. What appears to be an ink ownership signature clipped from the title page of an unknown book or pamphlet. Boldly signed and dated by Thomas, " Jno. Thomas / 1761". Tipped to cardstock measuring 6.25" x 3". Accompanied by an engraved vignette portrait of Thomas by G.P. Putnam. Together with: Artemas Ward Autograph Letter Signed ("Artemas Ward"). One page of a bifolium, 7.25" x 8.75", Shrewsbury [Massachusetts]; March 1, 1796. Letter addressed to " The Honble. Dwight Foster," a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts, discussing the current session of Congress. It contains intriguing references to an intercepted letter, foreign bribes and the Jacobins and Federalists. With integral address leaf. Docketed. Ward writes, in part: " ...I wish you had been able to have dotted more of the new members that were dotted; I wish you may not be disappointed in your expectations of some of the undotted ones; I think the interception of Forchet's letter was a peculiar smile in Providence; in my opinion it has had a tendency to silence the Jacobis, who were forever disclaiming against the Federalists, saying they were influenced by British Gold, but now we may conjecture with a good degree of certainty who would receive foreign bribes..." Signed, " Artemas Ward". With a postscript that reads, " I hope Congress will do no mischief." Accompanied by an engraved vignette portrait of Ward by S. A. Schoff and T. Kelly. John Thomas (1724-1776) was born in Marshfield, Massachusetts. As a young man, he studied medicine before beginning his own practice in Kingston, Massachusetts. A major general in the Continental Army, Thomas took part in the American siege of British-occupied Boston and briefly commanded the withdrawal of American troops from Quebec following the disastrous Canadian invasion. He died from smallpox on June 2, 1776 during the retreat from Canada. Due to his early death, autographs from Thomas are particularly scarce. Artemas Ward (1727-1800) served as commander of the forces surrounding the British in Boston following the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775. After the Continental Congress appointed George Washington as Commander-in-Chief, Ward became a major general and second in command. Ward gave orders to fortify Breed's Hill before directing the siege of Boston. Ward remained in command of the Eastern Department until he resigned from service in early 1777 due to poor health. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1780 to 1781 and later served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts from 1791 to 1795. Condition: Signature is lightly soiled; mounting page with uneven edges and pencil notations on verso. ALS with small area of paper loss to address leaf from seal removal upon opening that does not touch any text; 1" closed tear to second leaf that does not touch any text; pencil notation to corner of page [1].
