Isaiah Thomas Signed Wooden Printing Blocks

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Colonial America Four Isaiah Thomas Signed Wooden Printing Blocks Illustrating Knights & Castles Each Signed "I T" c. 1770, Lot of 4 Woodblock Printing Plates, Signed "I T" for Isaiah Thomas, all illustrating Knights and Castles, Choice Very Fine. These marvelous, original, hand-engraved, 2" x 2.5" wooden printing plates, all depict knights with plumed helmets and castles, and are likely from the same book. All are signed by prominent Colonial Massachusetts printer, Isaiah Thomas, and may be from one of the historical works he printed, "Elements of General History" (1789 edition), Chronicles of the Kings of England by Nathan Ben Saddi (1795 edition), or his history of France. It is also possible these cuts were used in one of his newspapers or his "New England Almanac." Two of these blocks show mounted knights approaching a castle, 1 shows knights and ladies standing outside a castle, and the last shows two mounted knights fighting a beast, possibly a bear. All are in very nice condition without significant flaws, except for the last mentioned block, which has a 1" crack in the lower right corner. These are attractive and interesting Colonial era woodblocks. A little research should reveal in what publication they were used.

Isaiah Thomas Autograph Receipt Signed for his Newspaper: The Massachusetts Spy

          Est: $1,000 - $1,800

Autographs "Isaiah Thomas" Signed Receipt "The Massachusetts Spy" ISAIAH THOMAS (1749-1831). American newspaper publisher and author who performed the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Worcester, Massachusetts, and reported the first account of the Battles of Lexington and Concord; the founder of the American Antiquarian Society. c. March 1, 1772 Pre Revolutionary War, Partly-Printed Document Signed, "Isaiah Thomas," (Boston), measuring 3" x 7.75", Very Fine. Being a receipt for six shillings and eight pence from Dr. Elisha Story for Thomas' newspaper, "The Massachusetts Spy" from March 1, 1771 to March 1, 1772. Thomas acknowledges "Received the contents" and appears to have engrossed the document, as well as signing it. Toned, with fold splits at edges; uneven top margin and two tape remnants on verso. The ink and signature are dark... Thomas was one of the most important and influential Colonial printers. He began publishing the anti-British "The Massachusetts Spy" in 1770. On April 16, 1775, he moved his press from Boston and three days later he fought at Lexington and Concord. Thomas published an eyewitness account. After the American Revolutionary War, his business prospered and he began publishing books, including the first "Mother Goose," the first Bible printed in English in the U.S. and the first dictionary printed in the U.S. (Perry's dictionary). Isaiah Thomas (January 30, 1749 - April 4, 1831) was an American newspaper publisher and author. He performed the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Worcester, Massachusetts, and reported the first account of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He was the founder of the American Antiquarian Society. Thomas was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was apprenticed on July 7, 1756 to Zechariah Fowle, a Boston printer, with whom, after working as a printer in Halifax, Portsmouth (New Hampshire) and Charleston (South Carolina), he formed a partnership in 1770. The partnership was formed to publish the Massachusetts Spy, and lasted for three months, after which Thomas continued publication alone. For the paper's motto, he chose "Open to all parties, but influenced by none." Initially it came out three times each week, then (under his sole ownership) as a semi-weekly, and beginning in 1771, as a weekly. The paper soon espoused the Whig cause and was the object of government efforts to suppress it. In 1771 Gov. Thomas Hutchinson ordered the attorney general to prosecute Thomas, but the grand jury failed to find cause for indictment. In Boston, in 1774, Thomas also published the Royal American Magazine, which was continued for a short time by Joseph Greenleaf, and which contained many printed Engravings by Paul Revere.

Park, Jr. (1922-2001) Philadelphian, Americana collector (sold Sotheby’s New York, 29 November 2000, lot 348). FIRST EDITION. "Amidst the darkness which surrounds the discovery of many of the arts, it has been ascertained that it is practicable to trace the Introduction and progress of Printing, in the northern part of America, to the period of the revolution. A history of this kind has not, until now, been attempted, although the subject, in one point of view, is more interesting to us than to any other nation. We are able to convey to posterity a correct account of the manner in which we have grown up to be an independent people, and can delineate the progress of the useful and polite arts among us with a degree of certainty which cannot be attained by the nations of the old world, in respect to themselves” (p.10, Preface). Thomas founded the American Antiquarian Society in 1812, and he donated his personal library to help form the organization's collection. ISAIAH THOMAS

          Est: $1,500 - $2,000

ISAIAH THOMAS (1749 - 1831) American printer and publisher of the Massachusetts Spy, printed the first American Bible in English, founded the American Antiquarian Society. Rare and fine printing content A.L.S. "I Thomas" 2pp. legal folio, Worcester, Aug. 28, 1800 to the booksellers, Thomas & Thomas in Walpole, [N.H.], writing, in full: "When you issue a Proposal for a book to be printed, or advertise one published by the Coy. in the Museum, why not mention who issue[d] the proposal, and who publish[ed] the book? In the Virginia Gaz[ette] I observe the spirit of the Museum has for its intended publisher Alexander Thomas, Junr. not T[homas] & T[homas] - every press but what I have sold is not in use, except a new Mahogany one, which will cost many dollars to fix it - besides I do not think it would pay the pay to transport a Press to Walpole and back again. Two presses can do a great deal of Work, and properly managed be more than sufficient for the hands Mr. C. Keeps. The indorsements on your note, I had from Wheeler amount to somewhat more than your Statement. - so says Mr. Brigham, who compared them. Merriam told me to Say, the Receipt on the other note is not found yet, and Wheeler tho' paid will not deliver it up till it is.-- I believe you have done as well as you could with Goldthwait, I always suspected we should be perplexed to get payment from him. If we could have our Espanaisse 2 or 3 months, I would endeavor to loan 3 or 4 pages more of Types. Have you written the Booksellers at the Southward, and have you Advertised that it is in the Press? We must not make the works too common - you are in too much haste to get rid of books you are concerned in publishing - they all get to the Market at once the public [will] blow upon them." With integral address leaf in Thomas' hand who adds "Free" and bears a black "Worcester Sept 1" postmark. On the side of the address panel, Thomas has added a short postscript: "Was Merriam to have Winchester in Sheets or bound? My agreement for binding?" The "Merriam" to whom Thomas refers is Ebenezer Merriam who was a former employee of Thomas. Later members of the Merriam family would establish the Springfield firm of G. & C. Merriam who upon the death of Noah Webster in 1843, acquired the rights to publish his dictionary. The printing firm of Thomas & Thomas was established in Walpole, N.H. in 1793 by Isaiah Thomas in partnership with David Carlisle, Jr. a former apprentice in his Worcester, Mass. shop and operated it as a printing house and bookstore. Thomas furnished the press, types and a large stock of books while Carlisle managed the day-to -day affairs. In the same year the press began publication of the New Hampshire Journal. Thomas retired from the firm in 1796, but Carlisle suffered a series of financial embarrassments that caused him to abandon the house and flee to Canada in 1797. The House again came into Thomas' possession and he ran it in conjunction with Alexander Thomas, who ran the day-to-day operations.
