§ James Havard Thomas (British, 1854–1921) Side profile of a young woman with a plait signed with initials lower right "JHT" a bronze relief, in original black frame h:16 w: 10 cm One of James Havard Thomas's most well known works, "Lycides', is on display at Tate Britain. The National Portrait Gallery also holds a pencil drawing completed by Havard Thomas in 1913 of the poet Rupert Brooke. Havard Thomas's beautiful marble relief of Rupert Brooke is in Rugby School Chapel, and is used as the frontispiece often to his books of poems. James Havard Thomas (1854 -1921) was a Bristol born sculptor, who studied at the Bristol School of Art and went on to further study at the Royal College of Arts having won a scholarship. He later studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. This Classical study helped establish Thomas as a respected artist and he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1872 onwards, his first solo exhibition being in 1902 at the Carfax Gallery, London. Thomas's work was much influenced by his time (1889 -1906) in Italy near Naples, where he drew inspiration from the popular Tanagra Statuettes. He would later go on to teach at the Slade, becoming Professor of Sculpture in 1915. Today his work continues to be esteemed, with paintings exhibited in several public collections including Sheffield City Art Galleries. Thomas was born in Bristol and studied at the Bristol School of Art, the R.C.A., as a National Scholar and the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, under Pierre-Jules Cavelier (French, 1814 -1894). He went on to become Professor of Sculpture at the Slade School in 1915. Havard Thomas is known for his beautiful reliefs to be found in illustrations in almost every edition of his poems and in his biographies.
