JEFFERSON, Thomas (1743-1826). Notes on the State of Virginia. London: John Stockdale, 1787. Handsome, tall copy of the first English edition, following the privately printed, extremely rare first edition (Paris, 1785) and a poor French translation (Paris, 1786). This edition contains new accounts of events during and since the Revolution, and features the map engraved at Jefferson's request to incorporate the most up-to-date topographical data on the soon-to-be-opened Ohio Valley. Two of the three appendices are of considerable significance; these were issued as supplements with a few copies of the original edition, but are integral to this edition. Appendix II contains the full text of the proposed Virginia constitution, while Appendix III contains the Virginia act for establishing religious freedom, passed in 1786. ESTC T147402; Howes J-78; Sabin 35896. Octavo (220 x 143mm). With final blank. (Very small edge tear from Advertisement leaf and a few others.) Large folding map of Virginia handcolored in outline (some offsetting), woodcut cave plan, folding chart. Both the book and portrait are inscribed by his wife Anne (1853-1926), dated 4 years after his death. Born Thomas J. Sanderson and Anne Cobden, the couple both assumed the hyphenated name Cobden-Sanderson when they married. She was as well known as a firebrand as her husband was an artist: an outspoken socialist, suffragette and advocate of vegetarianism. The inscriptions are most likely to George Clinton Ward (1863-1933), father of American suffragette Louise Ward Watkins, written during Anne's trip to California in 1926, shortly before her death. Midshipman at the Bar of the high Court of Justiciary for the Murder of William Jones Seaman on the Shore of Leith on the 15th of June 1814.", lower left signed and dated "I. KAY 1814" Condition: Very good condition. Slightly stained and browned at the edges. Short tear at lower left margin. Description: Portrait of the midshipman Thomas White, between two officers at the Supreme Court's court barrier at his trial for the murder of the sailor William Jones. The accused in a naval uniform with a neckerchief and frill turns his head to the right, his hat in front of him on the bench. Although Thomas White was later found guilty of murder, he was not given the death penalty, but was sentenced to 14 years of banishment. The Scottish caricaturist and engraver John Kay, from whom the sheet was created, was known for his caricatures of events and Edinburgh society. Oil on canvas. Housed in a later gesso decorated gilt frame. Signed lower right "J. T. Peele 1888", Note; accompanying the painting is a National Hall of Art certificate of Authenticity dated June 16, 1944. This painting was purchased by Dave Korf, owner of Korf Sixth Avenue clothing store in Kenorsha, Wisconsin, on a buying trip to New York city in 1944 and has remained in the family until 2017. Reference; John Thomas Peele, who was born in Peterborough, England, came to the United States when he was a child, and as a young man. He worked in Albany for two years as a portrait painter, and then in New York where he was elected a member of the National Academy of Design. Returning to London around 1851, he exhibited from 1852 to 1891 at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Society of British Artists, as well as at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham and Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He returned to England from 1841-1844 and later in 1851, while still exhibiting in the U.S. He remained in England, becoming active in the Society of British Artists and living on the Isle Of Man from 1858 to 1865. Cette lettre fait suite à celle que Jefferson envoya à Vaughan quelques jours plus tôt, sur le même sujet : «Since my letter of the 10th I have learnt that a new regulation has been adopted in the Navy department, by which no person can recieve a midshipman''s warrant unless they have been on some actual service at sea 6 months at least. […] Mr Wistar will therefore have to go thro'' this noviciate before his application will be recieved». (13.3cm.) high. * Condition: Lid has solder repaired split to either side of fork cut-out. Marks slightly rubbed but legible. Two small chips to top of glass body, plus some small frits to edges of cut decoration and edges of panel cutting.

(ESTATE OF JOHN NIXON) Thomas Willing (1731-1821) was an American merchant, a Delegate to the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania and the first president of the First National Bank of the United States, engaged in mercantile pursuits, in partnership with Robert Morris, until 1793. As a member of the Continental Congress in 1775 and 1776, he voted against the Declaration of Independence. Later, however, he subscribed £5,000 to supply the revolutionary cause. After the war, he became president of the Bank of North America (1781–91), preceding John Nixon, and then the first president of the Bank of the United States from 1791 to 1807. In August, 1807, he suffered a slight stroke, and he resigned for health reasons as president of the bank in November, 1807. Letter signed, Phila., 1815, sent to Sarah Nixon Cramond (1774 - 1865) daughter of John Nixon. Also signed by Henry Nixon (1776-1840), he was the son of John Nixon. Both Willing and Henry Nixon sign as Executors of the Estate of John Nixon. John Nixon was born the son of Sarah Bowles and Richard Nixon, a prominent Philadelphia shipping merchant and owner of Nixon's Wharf on the Delaware River. After being educated in the business rather than in a formal school setting, Nixon inherited his father's shipping and mercantile business in 1749. He soon became involved in public affairs, chosen a lieutenant of the Dock Ward Company in 1756, a warden of the port in 1766, one of the signers of paper money issued by Pennsylvania in 1767, and a manager of Pennsylvania Hospital, 1768-1772. In 1765 he married Elizabeth Davis; together they had five children. During early conflicts with the mother country, Nixon was an ardent proponent of the colonies. He signed the Non-Importation Agreement in 1765 and actively opposed the Stamp Act. When the Revolutionary War began, he joined the Committee of Safety, often acting as its chairman. As a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Third Battalion of Associators (a unit comprised of wealthy "Silk Stockings"), saw military action at the Battles of Trenton and Princeton. He commanded the defenses of the Delaware at Fort Island and the Philadelphia city guard. Nixon, however, is best known as the first person to publicly read the Declaration of Independence, which he did from the steps of the State House on July 8, 1776. On Monday, July 8, the Declaration of Independence was "proclaimed" (read aloud) by Col. John Nixon of the Philadelphia Committee of Safety at the State House in Philadelphia. It was also read again that evening before the militia on the Commons. Throughout the city, bells were rung all day. On that day as well the Declaration was publicly read in Easton, Pennsylvania, and Trenton, New Jersey. It was these first public readings which constituted America's first celebrations of the Fourth of July. In 1789 Nixon was one of the organizers and a director of the Bank of Pennsylvania, organized to supply the United States army with provisions and supplies. In 1784 he became a director of of the Bank of North America, the first national bank, serving as its president from 1792 until his death in 1808. Picture of Willing is NOT included here.
