    ink and watercolor on paper, signed at lower center "Mary Thomas," matted and framed. SS 10.5 x 15.5 in.; DOA 21 x 25 1/8 in. Born in Hazelhurst, Georgia, Mary Thomas graduated from Georgia State College for Women and then earned her master's degree from Duke University in 1935. An important advocate for art education in North Carolina, Thomas served as president of the North Carolina Art Teacher's Association and taught both at the secondary school level and at the Women's College of the University of NC in Greensboro. She met her second husband, one of the leading abstract painters of the Southeast, Howard Thomas, while both were taking a summer class at the University of Chicago in 1940. Since her early death in 1959, Thomas's work has been featured in exhibitions at the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, High Museum, and Georgia Museum of Art.
