      • Robert Frost Twice Signed & Inscribed Book to Cousin Joseph, Re: Thomas Bird Mosher
        Mar. 15, 2023

Robert Frost Twice Signed & Inscribed Book to Cousin Joseph, Re: Thomas Bird Mosher

        Est: $300 - $400

Robert Frost Twice Signed & Inscribed Book to Cousin Joseph, Re: Thomas Bird Mosher Limited edition copy of Thomas Bird Mosher's "Amphora: A Second Collection of Prose and Verse Chosen by the Editor of the Bibelot" (Portland: Thomas Bird Mosher, 1926. 137p) twice signed and inscribed by Robert Frost. Formerly gifted to his cousin, Joseph, Robert's bold inscription reads "Thomas Mosher was one of the very earliest friends of my poetry./ Robert Frost". He follows up this thought by adding below, "And I mustn't be allowed to/ forget him. R.F." Also features Joseph Frost's signature and label from personal library on inside of front cover. Expected wearing including some tearing to dust jacket, general page toning, and bumped corners, otherwise very good with exciting inscriptions regarding Frost's personal relationships! 4.5" x 7". An additional handwritten note from Joseph found on inside flap of dust jacket and dated 1954 reads, "When Robert F. saw this book he immediately remared [sic] 'That old book robber! -One of the authors and poets greatest friends-'. Mr. Mosher stole his rights for use of publication and did not consider copyrights but his beautiful editions were so liked by the authors the printers were never sued." Thomas Bird Mosher (1852-1923) was a notable publisher based out of Portland, Maine who, as Joseph suggests, would become a subject of controversy for his printing of works with or without the creator's permission. This collection compiled by Mosher, although posthumously printed, is an attractive example of the "beautiful editions" circulating while he was alive. Indeed an early proponent of Frost's work, Mosher first met with him in 1913 after agreeing to publish his poem Reluctance, after which time the poet considered him a personal friend. Joseph William Pepperrell Frost (1923-2008) was an avid historian and writer from Maine who, throughout his life, would share a close bond with his cousin Robert. With about fifty years between them, the two first met when Joseph was a young boy during Robert and Elinor's visit to the Frost ancestral home in the late 1920s. Later, Joseph's college years would be marked with frequent visits to stay with his cousin, even accompany Robert to some of his many speaking engagements. In adulthood, he dedicated part of his time to researching and compiling records related to Frost family genealogy, a collection of which is now housed within the Portsmouth Athenaeum of New Hampshire. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
