CIRCLE OF LT. ROBERT STRICKLAND THOMAS (BRITISH, 1787-1853) A Royal Occasion at Portsmouth Harbour, with ships of the Blue Squadron being moored by paddle tug Oil on canvas 18 x 27in. (46 x 68.5cm.) This interesting view of Portsmouth almost certainly shows H.M.S. Victory at anchor and flying the flag of an Admiral of the Blue, with vessels of a Blue squadron being moored nearby. The design of the tug, with its very tall funnel, and the costumes of the onlookers suggest a date of about 1830. The significance of the Royal Standard shown flying over a merchant's warehouse is, at present, unexplained although it has been suggested that the officer shown may possibly be William IV, either as King or as Duke of Clarence, before his accession, in the undress uniform of Admiral H.M.S. Victory, after being laid up at the end of 1812, served briefly as a Guard ship for six months from June 1823, before being made Port Admiral's flagship from January 1824, with a permanent mooring in the harbour where she remained until dry-docked in the 1921. The eventual introduction of steam-powered ships into the Royal Navy during the first half of the nineteenth century was a saga of epic proportions. Almost to a man, the naval establishment - still basking in the afterglow of Trafalgar - took the view that "the wooden walls of old England", which had been good enough for Nelson, would remain good enough to protect the British Isles well into the future despite significant technological advances. Steam, dirty and expensive as it was, was regarded with utter disdain and even the most strident efforts of the few forward-thinkers in the 'Senior Service' could only manage to produce one solitary exception to this entrenched opposition, the tug. Recognising the enormous value of being able to disregard both wind and tide, the Navy built its first tug, the Comet, at Deptford in 1822, and thereby began the tradition which still survives today in every naval dockyard in the world.

Attributed to Lieutenant Robert Strickland Thomas, R.N. (1787-1853) HMS Britannia passing Mt. Edgecumbe inscribed as titled on an old label attached to the reverse oil on canvas 49 x 66cm. HMS Britannia was built in 1820 and was in the Mediterranean between 1830-1832 and again in 1835. From 1836 she was flagship at Portsmouth and remained there until she went out of commission from 1842. Thomas entered The Royal Navy as an able seaman in 1805. He was soon promoted to midshipman on board Princess Charlotte, a frigate, and it may be that he got his grounding in art from the ship's captain, George Tobin, who was an enthusiastic amateur painter, alter to retire to Teignmouth and paint with Thomas Luny. In 1813 Thomas joined the frigate Creole and was made acting lieutenant. Whilst on a tour of duty off the coast of Africa he contracted a disease that left him deaf and unfit for further service, though he was confirmed in the rank of lieutenant in 1815. He took up full time painting to augment his half pay and concentrated mainly on naval subjects. The National Maritime Museum has five works by Thomas in their collection. He exhibited three pictures at The Royal Academy.

Unfit for service he took up painting full time to augment his half pay and his work is notable not only for it's quality but also for it's accuracy of detail as befits an artist who had spent half his life at sea. on canvas 24 1/2 x 36 in. (62.2 x 91.5 cm.) HMS Queen, the last Royal Navy sailing battleship to be completed before the advent of steam, was launched in Ports, outh in Portsmouth on 15th May,1839. She was originally to be named Royal Frederick, but was renamed in honour of Queen Victoria before she was completed. A 3104 ton ship, her armament consisted of 100 guns spread over her four decks. In almost continuous commission for twenty years, she was part of the fleet sent to the Black Sea during the Crimean War of 1854-1856, where she was distinguished herself at the first bombardment of Sebastopol on 17th October, 1854. HMS Queen was one of many vessels involved in a warship modernisation programme during 1858 and 1859. She was cut down to a two decker of 86 guns and installed with a 500 horsepower engine, and with her new increase in speed she was promptly commissioned into the Mediterranean Fleet, where she remained until finally returning home in 1864. Robert Strickland Thomas was born on 18th October, 1787 and joined the Navy on 8th November, 1805 serving on board the 38 gun 5th Rate Princess Charlotte under Captain George Tobin. He was employed at first on the West Indies station and then on the coast of Ireland. As a keen amateur painter and friendof the well known Teignmouth marine artist Thomas Luny, it is likely that Tobin encouraged the young R.S Thomas to sketch. From March, 1807 until June, 1813 Thomas served as Midshipman and Master's Mate on the 18 gun sloop Brisk. He then joined the 5th Rate Creole where he was nominated Acting-Lieutenant on 24th January 1814. On 11th March, 1815 he was advanced to Lieutenant and settled in Portsmouth. His intimate knowledge of the Navy gave Thomas a great wealth of subject matter to paint, and although not a prolific artist, his paintings are done in an accurate and pleasing manner. He exhibited three works at the Royal Academy between 1839 and 1842, and examples of his work can be seen at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
