Pair of candlesticks. Paris, Empire-Restoration period, after models of PIERRE PHILIPPE THOMIRE (1751-1843). Gilded bronze, chiseled and gilded with mercury.

    Est: €6,000 - €6,500

Pair of candlesticks. Paris, Empire-Restoration period, after models of PIERRE PHILIPPE THOMIRE (1751-1843). Gilded bronze, chiseled and gilded with mercury. Measurements: 77 cm (height). 14 x 14 cm (base). Pair of candelabra of great size that present an identical decoration following models of the prestigious Pierre Philippe Thomire, known as the best bronze artist of Paris during the period of the Empire, who in turn was based on a design of Charles Percier. The main body of both pieces features winged victories holding fruit baskets from which emerge five candelabra decorated with grooves, acanthus leaves and spirals. Winged victories, symbols of military triumph, were a staple of Napoleonic decoration. Rectangular bases support globes. Charles Percier (1764-1838) designed similar candelabra for Empress Josephine's cabinet at the Château de Saint-Cloud, where they were identified in the inventories of 1805 and 1807. Percier's original drawing of his candelabra (entitled Pieces of furniture in a "cabinet") is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. Philippe Thomire was a French sculptor known, above all, for his work in gilded bronze, through which he became the leading caster in France in the late 18th century, with an important workshop established in 1775. His career saw a surprising improvement when he began assisting Jean-Claude-Thomas Duplessis, the artistic director of the Manufacture de Porcelaine de Sèvres, and, when the latter died in 1783, Thomire continued his work, creating the bronze mounts for works that combined it with porcelain. Such was his success that he continued to work during the French Revolution. In 1804 he expanded the business by buying the workshop of a cabinetmaker, which allowed him to work with furniture. He worked for Napoleon and also did so after the fall of Napoleon, retiring at the age of 72 and, even then, continuing to create sculpture (he exhibited at the Salon de Paris). Claude Michallon was a French sculptor trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a student of Charles-Antoine Bridan (1730-1805) and Guillaume Coustou. In 1785 he won the grand prize for sculpture with a bas-relief representing Brutus. He studied at the Académie de France in Rome for six years, until 1791. When he returned to Paris, he received commissions for colossal statues and won several prizes awarded by the Committee of Public Information. He competed for several projects in Paris. Claude Michallon presented his marble group d'Aconce et Cydippe at the Paris Salon in 1793, and created several models for watch cases, such as Cupid and Psychée. Among others, Pierre-Philippe Thomire cast bronzes closely following his models.

PENDUDULE DE FORME D’AUTEL ANTIQUE Par François B…

Following models of PIERRE-PHILIPPE THOMIRE (Paris, 1751- 1843), XIX century. Pair of morillos with sphinxes. In gilded bronze and black patinated. Measurements: 31 x 36 x 10 cm. Sculptural bronze morillos: gilded on the pedestal, black patinated sphinxes. It is inspired by eighteenth-century models of the bronze sculptor Thomire. The pedestal rises on legs and has a waist with a careful decoration in relief based on masks, tendrils, flowers and bows. The sphinxes, worked in round, freely recreate Egyptian imagery, reflecting the Imperial taste for the hodgepodge of cultural references and the constant wink to periods and civilizations of great artistic splendor. In doing so, this pair of morillos echo the transition (visible in Thomire's late pieces) from neoclassicism to the exuberance of the Empire style, when he incorporated into his pieces decorative elements that reflected the opulence of the power of the Napoleonic regime. Philippe Thomire was a French sculptor known, above all, for his work in gilded bronze, thanks to which he became the leading caster in France at the end of the 18th century, with an important workshop established in 1775. Pair of cups; Attributed PIERRE-PHILIPPE THOMIRE (1751-1843). Mercury gilded bronze. They show slight wear.

    Est: €2,500 - €3,000

Pair of cups; Attributed PIERRE-PHILIPPE THOMIRE (1751-1843). Mercury gilded bronze. They show slight wear. Measurements: 41 x 12 x 12 x 12 cm (x2). Pair of decorative goblets completely made in mercury gilded bronze and decorated with fine chiseled floral theme, garlands and foliage. The cylindrical bases sit on a square base, as usual in the aesthetics of the period based on the pure lines of geometry. Several moldings run along the turned stem that gives way to the vessel or cup, which is obviously inspired by a classical vessel. The quality of the pieces invites one to think of the work of Philippe Thomire, a French sculptor known above all for his work in gilded bronze, thanks to which he became the leading caster in France at the end of the 18th century, with an important workshop established in 1775. He worked for Napoleon and also did so after the fall of Napoleon, retiring at the age of 72 and, even then, continuing with his creation in sculpture (he exhibited at the Salon de Paris). They show slight wear.

Empire clock attributed to PIERRE-PHILIPPE THOMIRE (Paris, 1751- 1843), after CLAUDE MICHALLON (Paris, 1752-1799). France, ca. 1805. "À l'amour couronné". Gilded bronze. In good condition. Sphere inscribed on the base. Measurements: 96 x 57 x 29 cm. Monumental Empire clock attributed to the bronze artist Pierre-Philippe Thomire, based on the prolific model made by the sculptor Claude Michallon. It is a piece with a stepped base on the upper part of which is the dial, with Roman numerals lacquered in black and bordered by a classic border. As in Michallon's model, on the body of the clock rest the figures of Cupid and Psyche worked in patinated bronze: Psyche places a crown on Cupid, while he brings his hand to her cheek in a delicate gesture full of love and tenderness. Formally, the position of the bodies stands out, denoting Michallon's savoir faire, as well as the careful detail of the modeling in the anatomy and in the qualities. The attribution of the design to Michallon (d. 1799) derives from an 1816 invoice by Feuchère for Würzburg in which he mentions this "pendulum of Psyché couronnant l'amour groupe modelé par feu Michallon". Pierre Philippe Thomire was a French sculptor known, above all, for his work in gilded bronze, thanks to which he became the leading caster in France at the end of the 18th century, with an important workshop established in 1775. Lit.: J. Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Empire candlestick attributed to PIERRE-PHILIPPE THOMIRE (1757-1843). France, ca. 1820. Gilt bronze. Onyx top. It has castors. It has an antique label on the back. Measurements: 75 x 82 x 82 cm. Gueridon type candlestick attributed to the French bronze artist Pierre-Philippe Thomire. The support, in gilded bronze, has been finely chiselled in its moulded shaft and claw feet. The stem is decorated with vegetal sheaths of acanthus and palmettes. The circular table, with a marbled onyx top, is outlined with a bronze fretwork of laurel leaves executed with exquisite chisel work. As was characteristic of the period, and in particular of Thomire's furniture, the piece presents a singular historicist syncretism, freely re-reading the past. Thomire was a French sculptor best known for his work in gilt bronze, which made him the leading caster in France in the late 18th century, with an important workshop established in 1775. His career saw a striking improvement when he began to assist Jean-Claude-Thomas Duplessis, the artistic director of the Manufacture de Porcelaine de Sèvres, and when the latter died in 1783, Thomire continued his work, creating the bronze mounts for works that combined it with porcelain. Such was his success that he continued to work during the French Revolution. In 1804 he expanded the business by buying the workshop of a cabinetmaker, which enabled him to work with furniture. Other works of interest were the chandeliers for the palaces of Fontainebleau and Compiègne, the Trianon table with legs in the shape of caryatids, the eight pieces for the centrepiece of Prince Louis Bonaparte's table (Musée Marmottan) and a twenty-four-armed chandelier with figures of winged women playing musical instruments made for Talleyrand (Musée Marmottan). He retired in 1823, although he continued to produce sculptures sporadically. King Louis-Philippe awarded him the Legion of Honour.
