              Jul. 28, 2024

ART THOMPSON (1948-2003) NU CHAH NULTH KINGFISHER

              Est: $600 - $800

Nuu-Chah-Nulth Limited Edition "Kingfisher" Serigraph signed in pencil by Art Thompson (1948-2003) Limited Edition Serigraph numbered 55 of 185. Professionally framed and matted. In frame 23.5"x26"x1.25". Weight 7 lbs.. Art Thompson was born in Whyac, an isolated village on the western end of the Nitinaht Lake reserve on Vancouver Island. His ancestral roots are in both the Coast Salish (Cowichan) and Nuu-chah-nulth (Ditidaht) nations. His father and grandfather were both artists known for their ceremonial pieces such as masks and regalia, as well as totem poles and canoes. Art spent much of his childhood away from his family and cultural traditions. At the age of two, he contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalized for the next three years. Shortly after he was able to return to his family, he was sent away to residential school in Port Alberni. School did not agree with Art, and after running away several times, he left for good when he was thirteen. His father then found him a job in the logging industry in the hopes that he would soon tire of it and return to school, but Art “loved working”. At first a member of a survey crew, then a tree planter, Art finally secured a position on a rigging crew where he worked for the next eight years.Just before his twelfth birthday, Art was initiated into the Tlukwana or Wolf Society. This tribal initiation ceremony had persisted throughout the period of culture change and has continued to be the principal occasion for the display of hereditary privileges and the performance of masked dances. However, Art didn't believe his initiation had any direct impact on his initial venture into Native art. In 1967, Art enrolled in the Commercial Art program at Camosun College in Victoria. He worked largely in two dimensional mediums such as paint and pastels. During this time he began to explore a narrative style with traditional Nuu-chah-nulth design. His advanced understanding of the traditional Nuu-chah-nulth design came at a time when this style had been virtually overlooked in the scholastic studies which were shaping the growing interest in Northwest Coast art. His personal contribution included using strong contemporary and traditional design shapes with a narrative approach to myth and legend. These early serigraph prints are now considered a turning point in establishing Art Thompson, Nuu-chah-nulth design, and the print medium as a whole in the contemporary art market.

              Aug. 11, 2023

20th C. Nootka Wood "Killer Whale Mask" - Art Thompson

              Est: $1,500 - $2,000

First time at auction... Art Thompson (First Nations / Canadian, Nuu-chah-nulth / Nootka, 1948-2003). Killer Whale Mask. Painted wood mask with horsehair and abalone shell, n.d. Signed with culture on verso. A splendid and quite sizable red cedar wood mask, hand-carved by Nootkan artist Art Thompson of the Ditidaht Band, depicting a killer whale with abalone shell inlays and a horse hair coiffure. The evocative visage displays magnificent features with huge, heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose with flared nostril, and fleshy lips, parted to display 2 rows of tab-shaped teeth. A towering dorsal fin protrudes from the top of the mask, emerging from a heavy mane of horsehair and ending in a large suspension hose and additional tufts of horsehair at the finial. A mesmerizing nacre shell inlay lies at the center of the forehead, and 2 additional inlays adorn the eyes of the whale heads on either side of the dorsal fin. Size: 9.5" W x 33.8" H (24.1 cm x 85.9 cm) In the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) culture, the killer whale is closely related to the wolf. These marine mammals hunt in packs with the same hunting skills used by wolves. It is a Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) belief that the killer whale has the ability to assume, once on land, the form of a wolf. According to the Seattle Art Museum: "Art Thompson belongs to the Ditidaht Band of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth (Nootkan) people. Born in 1948 in the village of Whyac, he maintains a dedicated involvement in the cultural life of his community. He also traces matrilineal heritage to the Salish. His dedication came after spending his early years in health institutions for tuberculosis, residential schools, logging, drugs and wandering before returning home in his late 20's. Art became aware of the Westcoast style from Joe David and Ron Hamilton. Art developed his own unique interpretation of the ancient Nuu-Chan-Nulth art in over 1 00 published serigraphs. He started in the late 1960's and was one of the first artist to develop a print style starting with traditional large blocks of color to anchor the design and traditional crest figures, more Northern than Westcoast. By the late 1970's new animal figures were being incorporated into his designs. In the mid-80's his print style included angular Coast Salish elements in with his traditional figures. During this time he worked with Duane Pasco and Steve Brown, both non-native artists working in the native styles. Since then he has worked in his own style continuing with his self-taught experimental approach and becoming more involved in being a Westcoast Indian. After living in Victoria, Art moved to Neah Bay to work and live away from the urban environment. Art represents the development of the Westcoast style of art, which is primarily Nootka, Coast Salish and Makah, as separate from and creatively equal to the Northern style, Haida and Kwakuitl. The Northern style has received most of the recognition traditionally and has been held as the best examples of the Northwest Coast to the detriment of the Westcoast style. Traditional Westcoast style in the pre-contact period focused on animal and human subjects in a rather realistic and naturalistic manner with the emphasis on important features such as heads and faces with suppression of other detail. The emphasis was put on the sculptural details and little decoration was added. In the late 1800's there was a lot of contact with Haida artists and their graphic styles with formlines, emphasis on elaborate details, greater stress on symmetry and less cursive treatment. This hybrid style became the basis for the modern Westcoast style with its use of distinct elements such as the for pointed stars, relative naturalism, tolerance of open spaces, humanoid face shapes, geometric elements (especially as borders) and finally the use of dashes, circles and curlicues. Influenced by the rugged environment of the Northwest Coast, Art graphically portrays the compassion for nature reflected in the legends and history of his people. Art devotes much of his time to educating a wide range of art-enthusiasts on Native culture."
