THOMPSON BENJAMIN: (1753-1814) Count Rumford. American-born British Physicist & Inventor whose challenges to established physical theory were part of the 19th century revolution in thermodynamics. A.L.S., Rumford, four pages, 4to, Munich, 23rd August 1810, to Benjamin Delessert at Paris, in French. Thompson announces his arrival in Munich after eight days of pleasant travel and adds that he has been received in a very flattering manner. He further adds that he would like to take a large detour on his way back to Paris in order to visit Nice, Marseille and Montpelier, as well as visiting the court of Princess Auguste in Milan. Thompson continues to refer to his finances, asks his correspondent to forward a letter on his behalf to his daughter and also reports on a visit to 'Mr. Reichenbach's workshop where he produces optical and mathematical instruments. He has surpassed all that we have achieved, even in England....His repeater circles are admired by all connoisseurs. Would you please tell Mr. Delambre that if we want to have one in the Paris observatory similar to the one existing in Milan I will take care of the matter in order to get it delivered without delay in July next year. You can tell him on my behalf that I have carefully examined Mr. Reichenbach's workshop and have taken note of all the methods used....' With integral address leaf in Thompson's hand and bearing a good black wax seal (the original opening of which has caused a small area of paper loss and minor tear, just affecting a few words of text, but not the signature, otherwise VG
