        BOB THOMPSON (1937 - 1966) The Chase.

        Est: $30,000 - $40,000

BOB THOMPSON (1937 - 1966) The Chase. Oil on masonite board, 1958. 483x550 mm; 19x21 5/8 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right recto. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "P-town" in oil across the verso. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, private collection, New York; thence by descent, private collection, New York. The Chase is an extraordinary and fascinating painting by Bob Thompson - an early oil from his breakout period in Provincetown. In the summer of 1958, Thompson spent time painting in Provincetown and taking classes at the Seong Moy School of Painting and Graphic Arts. There he began incorporating figurative elements to his abstract painting, and befriended fellow resident artists Emilio Cruz and Gandy Brodie. This brief period begins with the painting The Funeral of Jan Müller, Thompson's homage to the influential German emigré artist whose work he encountered in Provincetown but who passed away shortly before Thompson arrived on the Cape. That summer, Thompson produced an expressive figurative body of work painted in oil in a dark somber palette on masonite board. Many of his paintings were exhibited in the 1958 Provincetown Arts Festival sponsored by the Chrysler Museum, 13 of which were purchased by art benefactor Walter Chrylser. The Funeral of Jan Müller, Myron Kunin Collection of American Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, is featured in the current traveling exhibition Bob Thompson: This House Is Mine, curated by Diana Tuite, Katz Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Colby College Museum of Art.

        Oct. 07, 2021

        BOB THOMPSON (1937 - 1966) Tree God.

        Est: $30,000 - $40,000

BOB THOMPSON (1937 - 1966) Tree God. Oil on wood panel, 1960. 187x546 mm; 7 3/8x21 1/2 inches. Signed, titled and dated in oil, verso. Provenance: private collection, New York, acquired from Sotheby's New York, April 4, 2008. This fascinating painting on wood is related to a number of similar horizontal scenes painted by Bob Thompson in 1960. Thompson created compositions set in a mythological paradise or Garden of Eden, including his dark hatted figures, classical nudes and over-sized demigods. His monumental Garden of Muse, 1960, in the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum is the best known example of these scenes. This early painting dates from the artist's second year in New York after leaving Provincetown. Thompson moved to Greenwich Village, finding a studio on Clinton Street in 1959, and soon became part of the downtown art scene. There he reconnected with his close knit group of Provincetown artist friends. In 1960, he had his first solo exhibition in New York at the Delancey Street Museum, founded by Red Grooms, and a two-person exhibition with Jay Milder at the Zabriskie Gallery. In December, he married Carol Plenda whom he had also met in Provincetown.

Dorothy Levitt Beskind, New York, New York (acquired directly from the above). The Estate of Dorothy Levitt Beskind, New York, New York. note: In a career spanning just eight years of full-time painting, Bob Thompson created over one thousand works and reached a prominence only few African-American artists of his generation achieved within the mainstream New York art world. Known for his large, allegorical paintings, Thompson mined his art historical knowledge and his close study of classical old masters like Masaccio, Piero della Francesca and Goya for powerful imagery that he engaged in his deeply personal expression. He studied art at the University of Louisville, spending a summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts at the suggestion of his professor Mary Spencer Nay, where he forged important connections with Red Grooms and other artists. These friendships later gained him access at New York galleries, including those of Martha Jackson and Paula Cooper, which led to his rapid recognition and success in the New York art world of the 1960s. Martha Jackson in turn introduced Thompson to Dorothy Levitt Beskind, a prolific collector and artist in her own right, who began a project of documenting the daily lives of prominent New York artists in film, dedicating her first installment to Thompson in 1965. She also photographed the artist in the garden of the Martha Jackson Gallery, casually gazing out from under his fedora. The gouache she acquired from the artist, presented here, encapsulates Thompson's project, incorporating fantastical creatures, bird-human hybrids playing out a dramatic scene while a Goya-inspired winged figure engages the viewer directly from below. The artist's use of bird imagery harkened back to a dream where birds "swept everything up, including me," [1] and contributed to his personal mythological stories of power and freedom. BOB THOMPSON (1937 - 1966) Self Portrait.

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

BOB THOMPSON (1937 - 1966) Self Portrait. Oil on wove paper, 1959. 597x444 mm; 23 1/2x 17 1/2 inches (sheet). Provenance: the estate of the artist; Vanderwoude Tananbaum Gallery, New York (1992); Phillip Sanfield, Farmington Hills, Michigan; Pensler Galleries, Washington, DC; Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville, South Carolina; private collection (2018). With a Vanderwoude Tananbaum Gallery letter of authenticity, dated May 22, 1992, signed by Carol Thompson (the artist's wife). The gallery were representatives of the estate of Bob Thompson through the early 1990s. This oil on paper is an extraordinary and very scarce self-portrait by Bob Thompson, made early in his New York period. While Thompson had his first solo exhibition in the spring of 1959 in his native Louisville, he had already moved to New York in the fall of 1958. Encouraged by friends and the success of his Provincetown paintings, Thompson moved to Greenwich Village, drawn to its "Beat" scene of art happenings and jazz clubs. He first shared a loft with artists Jay Midler, Christopher Lane and briefly Red Grooms, on Monroe Street before moving to Clinton Street in 1959. Thompson had his first New York solo exhibition at the Delancey Street Museum in 1960. Thompson only painted a small number of self-portraits in his all too brief, eight year career - the Speed Art Museum of Louisville recently acquired his 1960 Self-Portrait in the Studio. Golden pp. 46-47.

Bob (Robert Louis) Thompson was an important African American modernist artist in the 1960s who was greatly influenced by Paul Gauguin's Fauvist paintings. He often used Biblical subjects, and created an effect of idealized, faceless figures. Born in Kentucky, he studied at the University of Louisville art program before moving to New York where he became part of the "Beat Generation" and received a grant in 1961 from the Walter Gutman Foundation. He was most prolific from 1963-1965, enjoying solo shows at Martha Jackson Gallery, Richard Gray Gallery and Paula Cooper Gallery, where collector Joseph Hirshhorn purchased a number of his paintings. His work was also included in Yale University's "Seven Young Painters" exhibition in 1964. Tragically, his life was cut short in 1966 at the height of his career, just before his twenty-ninth birthday, while undergoing emergency gall bladder surgery in Rome. Oil On Masonite. "Fearful Insider". 1958. Signed lower right. Signed, titled, dated, and inscribed "Provincetown 58". Originally from the estate of Alexander Raydon, New York. From a Larchmont, NY collection. In the summer of 1958, Thompson began to add figurative elements to his abstract painting - greatly influenced by fellow resident artists Jan Müller and Gandy Brodie. Beginning with his hommage, The Funeral of Jan Müller, these early works are painted in a darker, cooler palette on masonite. Unlike his mature style, these early works are also signed either "Rob Thompson or R. Thompson" in block letters and inscribed on the verso. The Provincetown paintings were all exhibited in the 1958 Provincetown Arts Festival sponsored by the Chrysler Museum, of which Walter Chrysler purchased 13 of the works. Today few works are known - from this group.
