Housed in a period molded giltwood frame. Dated 1843. 35 1/2" x 28 1/2" sight, 42" x 34 1/2" OA.  Catalogue Note: The son of portrait painter Cephas Thompson (1775-1856), Cephas Giovanni Thompson (1809-1888) studied under his father before venturing out on his own in search of commissions for portraiture. He stayed confined mostly to the Northeast during his career, working around Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and finally New York City, where he would remain.       CEPHAS GIOVANNI THOMPSON (MA, 1809-1888) Portraits of George G. and Penelope Williams of Boston, the adult children of Samuel King Williams, SR 1785-1874, a counselor (maritime lawyer) and Elizabeth Whitman Williams 1795-1886 (a descendant of pilgrims Edward Winslow, 1597-1655 and Suzannah Fuller). Oval format oil on canvas, unsigned, circa 1850, housed in their original but different magnificent gilt Victorian gesso deep cove frames, he is in black with a large black cravat and bushy auburn hair; she is in blue velvet with her ginger hair in a braided bun, seated in a red upholstered chair. OS: 38" x 33" & 39" x 34", SS: (both) 29" x 24". Old handwritten label on back of her frame reads "Herman W. Williams, Harvard". Very good condition, minor frame loss.

      CEPHAS GIOVANNI THOMPSON (AMERICAN 1809-1888) Virgin Mary with Guardian Angels and Saint Innocents, oil on canvas 109.8 x 80.2 cm (43 1/4 x 31 5/8 in.) signed with initials lower left, C.G.T. LOT NOTES Cephas Giovanni Thompson was the son of the well known early 19th Century self-taught portrait painter Cephas Thompson, who was born, lived and worked in Middleboro, Massachusetts. Like his father, Cephas was born in Middleboro. Initially working in Plymouth, Massachusetts, he would travel the East Coast, working in Boston, Bristol, and Philadelphia before settling in New York City. Thompson established a studio in the University Building at Washington Square in New York, and became a fashionable artist known not only for his portraituree but also for his allegorical and romantic scenes, often featuring beautiful young women. Two canvases that he painted during this time, Spring and Autumn were exhibited at the Apollo Association in 1839. Shown for reference here, Spring is currently in the Permanent Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of New York.

Condition: Very minor retouch to nose, minor craquelure. Provenance: This portrait and that of Harriet Loud Howe, lot (147250/1), were passed down by descent through members of the Shaw, Reed, Loud, and Howe families. It was thought that this portrait may be of Maria Theresa Reed (b. August 30, 1830, d. July 25, 1860).

      Portrait of a Woman. Signed and dated "C.G. Thompson 1847" l.l. Oil on canvas, depicting the woman wearing a black dress with white lace collar and black ribbon necklace, seated in a chair with red upholstery, 8 x 10 in., in a gilt gesso frame. Condition: Good, a couple of light superfluous drips. Note: Cephas Giovanni Thompson was born in Middleboro, Massachusetts, the son of artist Cephas Thompson. His career began at Plymouth. In 1837, he settled in New York City, after working in Boston, Bristol, and Philadelphia. In 1840, he did portraits of leading citizens in New Bedford, and from 1849 to 1852 was in Boston. In 1852, he went to Europe with his family and spent seven years in Italy, then returned to New York City in 1859, where he remained until his death.
