A fine example of American chromolithography in imitation of fine art painting, this chromo is mounted on canvas affixed to its original wood stretcher. The classic bucolic rural scene shows that even in the 1860s many Americans were wistful for the old-fashioned country ways.

JEROME THOMPSON (American, 1814-1886) Riverbank in Bloom, 1865 Oil on canvas 18 x 15 inches (45.7 x 38.1 cm) Signed and dated lower left: Jerome Thompson / 1865 THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST Massachusetts-born landscape painter Jerome Thompson was born into an artistic family, but had a terrible time trying to follow his desire to become a painter. His father, Cephas Thompson, was distinguished portraitist, who not only refused to give Jerome art lessons but destroyed his early paintings because he wanted him to be a farmer. As a youth, Jerome decided to move with his sister to Barnstable, Massachusetts, and earned money as a sign and portrait painter. He painted Daniel Webster, and Abraham Quary, the last surviving member of the Nantucket Indian tribe. In 1835, he opened a portrait studio in New York City, but a landscape, A Pic Nick, Camden, Maine, that he entered in the 1850 National Academy exhibit, changed the direction of his painting because it got so much positive reaction. After painting genre scenes for a couple years, Thompson went to England in 1852 for a few years of independent study. It is interesting to speculate about what he saw there, but certainly upon his return his work began acquiring the meticulousness, rich color, and attention to texture that characterizes the work of the British Pre-Raphaelites. Indeed the present painting, produced at the close of the Civil War, can nearly be termed American Pre-Raphaelitism in its remarkable emphasis on fine draftsmanship and jewel-like color.

Jerome Thompson (American, 1814-1886) The Old Man of the Mountains, New Hampshire signed lower right with initials "JT '78" oil on panel 17 x 17cm Provenance: Private collection, Cambridgeshire High above the Franconia Notch gateway to northern New Hampshire there is an Old Man, made of stone. He is one of the most remarkable wonders of the mountain world. The profile of the Old Man is composed of Conway red granite and is an illusion. It is formed by five ledges, that when lined up correctly give the appearance of an old man with an easterly gaze, clearly distinct and visible from only a very small space near Profile Lake. When viewed from other locations in Franconia Notch, the same five ledges have a very rough and ragged appearance, and there is no suggestion of the Old Man's face.

PROVENANCE Alexander Gallery, New York Gloria and Richard Manney Collection (Sale: Sotheby's, New York, May 27, 1993, lot 191 0 EXHIBITED Albany, New York, Executive Mansion, on loan, 1983-1988 LITERATURE AND REFERENCES Lee M. Edwards, "The Life and Career of Jerome Thompson", The American Art Journal, vol. 14, no. 4, Autumn, 1982, p. 26, illustrated p. 24 Isabelle K. Savelle, "Forty Rooms, View of White House", New York Alive, p. 41, illustrated CATALOGUE NOTE Jerome Thompson, son of portrait painter Cephas Thompson (1775-1856), began his career as a portraitist himself. As the American public lost its taste for portraiture and genre scenes grew in popularity, Thompson changed his direction to suit his time. He developed a narrative style and often depicted themes popularized by the ballads of the day, such as The Old Oaken Bucket. Youth and Old Age are thematically more reflective than the artist's sentimental genre scenes. They show the influence of Thomas Cole clearly. Lee Edwards observes of them: "In 1874 and 1875, Thompson painted a pair of allegorical pictures, Youth and Old Age, in which both the imagery and the subject matter pay conscious homage to Thomas Cole. Thompson's iconography in Youth (the angel, the pagoda in the sky, the exotic setting) is clearly in spired by comparable imagery in Thomas Cole's Youth (1840) form the Voyage of Life series (Munson-Williams Proctor Institute) which was well known from engravings. Thompson may also have seen Cole's Cross of the World series. Finished pictures from the group were exhibited in 1874 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art." (Edwards, p. 26)
