Mary (1843) Thompson Sold at Auction Prices

MARY MAMIE LOCKETT THOMPSON (American, 1859-1952) PORTRAIT OF GOVERNOR ANDREW BARRY MOORE

Oil on canvas half-portrait of a gentleman wearing black coat and white shirt. Signed lower right "Mamie Lockett, Montgomery ALA". Housed in its orig decorated gilt frame. Note: Andrew B. Moore (1807-1873) was Alabama's sixteenth governor from December 1, 1857 to December 2, 1861. His claim to fame was that he took Alabama out of the Union. Also he is noted for enacting the 8,000 man state army in 1860 and ordering them to seize the arsenal at Mount Vernon and Forts Morgan & Gaines on Mobile Bay (before Lincoln takes office & before Fort Sumter). An interesting note is that Gov. Moore through his daughter's mother-in-law, Mrs. Napoleon (Mary Clay) Lockett to have artist Nicola Marschall design a confederate flag which became the first Confederate flag (the stars and bars)and also was responsible for the designing of the uniforms as well. Mrs. Lockett also sewed the orig flag with a group of ladies from Marion, Alabama.Two of Gov. Moore's daughters married into the Lockett family. One of them was Martha Moore Lockett who had a daughter named Mary Mamie Lockett Thompson and was the artist of this portrait. SIZE: 30" x 25". CONDITION: Paint loss, mostly to lower edge and right corner. Small puncture in background and slit at shirt. Otherwise, good. 9-26998
