Signed, dated, numbered 3/20 and inscribed "Littleton Studios, Spruce Pine, NC" in pencil, lower margin. Printed at Littleton Studios, Spruce Pine, NC. Mildred Thompson had a lifelong fascination with scientific phenomena, studying space, mathematics and physics, much like her fellow Washington, DC artist, Alma Thomas. These interests are reflected particularly in her prints of the Helio Centric Series. Thompson began formal artistic training at Howard University in 1953, studying under James A. Porter--artist, instructor of painting and drawing, chairman of the art department and director of the Howard University Gallery of Art. Professor Porter published Modern Negro Art in 1943, the first comprehensive study in the United States of African American art. Signed, dated "Nov. 1963" and inscribed "New York" in ink, lower left. Provenance: private collection, Germany. This and the following lot are two very scarce works on paper, disturbing and powerful drawings by Mildred Thompson. Early in her career, shortly before her moving back to Germany in 1963, Thompson drew a series of these expressive, figurative works in New York. They express the racism and violence that she encountered in American upon return from a three year course of study at the Art Academy of Hamburg in Germany. While in New York, two etchings were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art and an etching and another 1963 ink drawing by the Brooklyn Museum. Thompson also had two fall fellowships for stay at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. After three years in the US, Thompson retunred and remained in Germany working as an expatriate artist until 1975, where she developed an important body of work in abstraction in painting, printmaking and sculpture..
