      Emily Gertrude Thomson (British, 1850-1929) 'A Mortal's Near' arched watercolour, signed with initials lower left 8 1/2 x 6 1/2in. (21.5 x 16.5cm.) * Emily Gertrude Thomson was a painter, miniaturist, stained glass artist and illustrator. She was born in Glasgow and studied at the Manchester School of Art, later joining the studio of the renowned illustrator and designer Frederic Shields. She was a friend of Lewis Carroll and was asked to illustrate some of his books, including Three Sunsets and Other Poems in 1878, and later the cover of The Nursery Alice in 1890. She joined the Royal Society of Miniature Painters in 1912
