Hugh Thomson, Turn-of-the-Century Irish Illustrator, Eight Original Drawings

        Est: $200 - $300

Hugh Thomson, Turn-of-the-Century Irish Illustrator, Eight Original Drawings Eight original pencil drawings on paper by Irish illustrator Hugh Thomson (1860-1920), one signed with the artist's "HT" monogram and dated "1913." Graphite and blue colored pencil on watermarked cream paper sheets, many drawings with handwritten captions identifying the location. In very good to near fine condition overall, a few with isolated minor foxing. The largest drawings measure 6.75" x 9". The handsome array of original drawings by Hugh Thomson include 6 landscapes and 2 caricature type portraits. Thomson's landscapes depict cow pastures, monuments, and ports in Northumberland near the Scottish border. Studies include: "The Cross at Branxton commemorating Flodden," "Study at Blyth," "The Cheriots (?) from Chillingham Castle Gates," "Amble + Coquet River + Island from Warkworth Castle," and "Sat Sept 8 Braceleaf [Border Country]." Thomson's two portraits capture the quintessential crusty British mariner. A squinting mustachioed ship's captain walks briskly with his hands in his pockets, while a pot-belled bearded old salt takes in the lay of the land. In the latter drawing, Thomson appears to have first sketched the outlines in blue colored pencil. Hugh Thomson's artistic career began at age 17 when he joined the London-based firm of Marcus Ward & Co. He soon left greeting cards behind, contributing to the English Illustrated Magazine. Thomson's best known illustrations appeared in classic editions of Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen, and Gaskell. Thomson was praised for his meticulous working method, which included conducting research at museums prior to executing his work. As a result, Thomson's illustrations flawlessly replicate historical fashion, hairstyles, furnishings, and architectural details. From the Collection of M.B. Goldstone. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
