      Prisoner artist.- Execution.- Thomson (W., unknown prisoner artist active 1826-1828) The Morning of Execution, Newgate Prison, proof impression after a painting by Thomson now held in the Museum of London [acc. no. A28580], etching on cream wove paper with partial water mark date '18[??]', platemark 90 x 148 mm (3 1/2 x 5 3/4 in), sheet 122 x 194 mm (4 3/4 x 7 1/2 in), deckle edges, minor surface dirt, unframed, 1828; together with J. M. Cullam's 'A Representation of the Remains of Henry Duke of Buckingham (Beheaded Nov. 2nd 1483...', and a letterpress explanation leaf detailing an inscription found in the 'Chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the Cathedral Church of Sarum', all unframed (3) ⁂ Few examples of Thomson's prints exist, with only 2 other variant etchings known to be by him. The other etchings by his hand are inscribed 'Sketched on the spot by a prisoner W. Thomson Sepr 1826', and 'Etched by a Prisoner', suggesting that Thomson himself was incarcerated in Newgate Prison [see British Museum no. 1867,0309.403]
