  • Peugeot. 1905.
    Mar. 03, 2024

    Peugeot. 1905.

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: WALTER THOR (1870-1929) SIZE: 41 1/8 x 57 1/8 in./104.6 x 145.2 cm PRINTER: Imp. G. Elleaume, Paris DESCRIPTION: It all started with crinoline dresses—which used steel rods—leading to umbrella frames, wire wheels, and ultimately bicycles. Thus is the ancestry of the Peugeot bicycle, whose “Le Grand Bi” penny-farthing model was introduced to the public in 1882 by Armand Peugeot, along with a range of other bicycles. Thor’s poster for the company demonstrates that as long as there have been people riding around on bicycles, there have been dogs that love to give chase. This female rider looks rather concerned—though her choice of riding attire would appear to be more of an immediate concern than the elegant pooch keeping pace with her—and we’re not even convinced that she’s aware of the additional two pups closing in on her quickly from the other side. Though the public in general is more familiar with their automotive output, Peugeot continues to manufacture bicycles to this day. However, the car and bike companies parted ways in 1926. Thor, a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, is best known for his humorous turn-of-the-century transportation posters. (Art Nouveau; Bicycles; Animals; Dogs)

ARTIST: WALTER THOR (1870-1929) SIZE: 62 5/8 x 45 3/8 in./159 x 115.2 cm PRINTER: Affiches Kossuth, Paris DESCRIPTION: In the early days of motoring, winning a race was virtually a prerequisite to finding a market for a new make of car. Here, Darracq draws attention to its recent triumphs, including a hard-fought first place in the Vanderbilt Cup race on October 14, 1905, with Victor Hemery at the wheel. The design itself is quite remarkable: a calm, steady driver contrasts against the wild sparks bursting off the front wheels, proving that anyone can tame this most fierce of vehicles. Jul. 12, 2022

    Automobiles Barré. ca. 1902.

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: WALTER THOR (1870-1929) SIZE: 62 x 46 in./157.5 x 116.8 cm PRINTER: Affiches Kossuth, Paris DESCRIPTION: When seen on a road sign, "barré" means "Do Not Enter." This could have been a problem for the Barré automotive company. Walter Thor, however, decided to drive right through this potential marketing barrier, and as a result produced an advertising coup. This unruly rabble in the rumble seat doesn't give a fig for unfinished road work, and even thumb their noses at the gendarme as they fly past. So many auto ads of the period emphasize elegance and luxury, but this is truly a car for the people: one that states unequivocally to those who seek to bar access, or progress, or entry, that they can go stuff it. Vulcan / Pneu Cuir. .

    Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: WALTER THOR (1870-1929) SIZE: 45 1/2 x 61 7/8 in./115.6 x 157 cm PRINTER: Affiches Kossuth, Paris DESCRIPTION: Leather isn’t typically associated with pneumatic tires. And yet, before John Boyd Dunlop—the father of the modern tire—created the inflatable tires for his son’s tricycle, Robert William Thomson, another Scottish innovator, invented the “Aerial Wheel,” which consisted of a canvas inner tube surrounded by a leather outer tire. Even Dunlop’s tire at first had a modified leather hosepipe as an inner tube under rubber treads. So even though it isn’t commonplace, we shouldn’t be surprised to see the use of leather in early tire production, as is the case with Vulcan, the winner of the “Golden Wheel” at a 1905 binding competition. And seeing as this overjoyed driver has opted to drape himself in a driving coat that matches his tire of choice, we have to assume that at least for a brief period of time, the French automotive public was pleased to roam the roads upon Vulcan leather tires. Thor, a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, is best known for his humorous turn-of-the-century transportation posters. (Art Nouveau; Automobiles)

Elleaume, Paris DESCRIPTION: "Just as it had for cycling, Griffon, once it had started manufacturing motorcycles, took an interest in competitions, because success on the race track... was one of the strongest sales pitches. Apparently in the thick of a contest, driving up one of the twisting roads of Mont Ventoux, in pursuit of the best possible time, this soberly dressed motorcyclist is making the most of his bravery, his aerodynamics, and the humorous style of Walter Thor, which is always perfectly in tune with his sporting subject" (Handlebars/Joystick, p. 116). Your robbery attempts are no match for the Grillon bicycle rider, as the man in the blue jacket points out: “Don’t worry, my friend, I will catch up with him thanks to my Grillon!” Unfortunately, the “Cricket” bicycle sped off without a trace, as hardly any historical information exists. Thor, a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, is best known for his turn-of-the-century transportation posters, which are generally far more humorous than this epic of universal travel. Est: €600 - €1,000

Walter Thor (1870-1929), Peugeot Voiturette Lion France, circa 1890 Printed by G. Elleaume, Paris. Colour lithograph, framed behind glass A large advertising poster with decorative artwork design depicting an arch with Greek style pillars, in the archway a lion with full bushy mane standing on an arrow, letter above in red PEUGEOT, below a picture of a pre 1900s car, with the text underneath reading, Valentigney = Doubs. 159 cm x 119 cm Provenance: Poster Collection, Bicycle Museum Velorama, Nijmegen. Catalogue note: The Peugeot family of Valentigney, Montbéliard, Franche-Comté, France, began in the manufacturing business in the 19th century. In 1842, they added production of coffee, pepper, and salt grinders. The company's entry into the vehicle market was by means of crinoline dresses, which used steel rods, leading to umbrella frames, saw blades, chisels, wire wheels, and bicycles. Armand Peugeot introduced his "Le Grand Bi" penny-farthing in 1882, along with a range of other bicycles. The car company and bike company parted ways in 1926 but Peugeot bicycles continued to be built until very recently. Armand Peugeot became interested in the automobile early on and, after meeting with Gottlieb Daimler and others, was convinced of its viability. The first Peugeot automobile, a three-wheeled, steam-powered car designed by Léon Serpollet, was produced in 1889; only four examples were made. Steam power was heavy and bulky and required lengthy warmup times. In 1890, after meeting Daimler and Émile Levassor, steam was abandoned in favour of a four-wheeled car with a petrol-fuelled internal combustion engine built by Panhard under Daimler licence. The car was more sophisticated than many of its contemporaries, with a three-point suspension and a sliding-gear transmission. Condition: discolouration, crease, very minor damage centre

Artist: WALTER THOR (1870-1929) Size: 62 1/4 x 45 in./158 x 144.3 cm La Lithographie Parisienne When seen on a road sign, "barré" means "Do Not Enter." This could have been a problem for the Barré automotive company. Walter Thor, however, decided to drive right through this potential marketing barrier, and as a result produced an advertising coup. This unruly rabble in the rumble seat doesn't give a fig for unfinished roadworks, and even thumbs their noses at the gendarme as they fly past. So many auto ads of the period emphasize elegance and luxury; this is truly a car for the people: one that states unequivocally to those who seek to bar access, or progress, or entry, that they can go stuff it. A toy car has run over a little girl doll! A little girl doll in a red smock can't bear to look. The toy policeman has a baleful expression. A jumble of debris – little toy submarines, horsies, beach balls – lies pell-mell, as in a child's room that hasn't been cleaned. An absolutely marvelous evocation of a child's imagination in all its storytelling wonder. (Product; Children)
