Archibald Thorburn Sold at Auction Prices

Bird painter, Painter, Bird painter, Illustrator, Lithographer, b. 1860 - d. 1935

Artist Archibald Thorburn earned the grand accolade of being one of the best watercolor birdlife painters in history. Born in 1860 in Scotland, Thorburn was always interested in wildlife and birds and started drawing his observations in his garden as a youngster. Having studied first in Scotland and later in London, Archibald Thorburn's prints were regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy during the 1880s and 1890s. He had the honor of painting Queen Victoria on at least three occasions.

As an artist, Archibald Thorburn was asked to create pictures for the Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Isles publication in 1887, which helped launch him into the public eye. Archibald Thorburn's drawings are preliminary sketches of birds, and due to his popularity, they are also much sought after. Archibald THORBURN (Scotland, 1860-1935)

    Est: €200 - €400

Signed A. Thorburn to the base. A finely cast bronze sculpture of a falcon perched on an ornate gilt bronze pedestal, mounted on a stepped black marble base. The falcon is depicted in exquisite detail, with finely sculpted feathers and a poised, watchful expression. The base features intricate leaf and vine motifs. Archibald Thorburn grew up in Viewfield House on the outskirts of Lasswade, a rural village to the southeast of Edinburgh. His father Robert Thorburn, an artist himself, was an exacting man and demanded the highest accuracy, ripping up any of his son's weaker sketches. Thorburn soon became highly skilled at producing accurate renderings of the British wildlife, aided no doubt by his countless jaunts through the Scottish countryside. Archibald THORBURN (Schotland, 1860-1935). Archibald THORBURN (Schottland, 1860-1935) Signiert A. Thorburn an der Unterseite.
