THORNE '67" to lower right of painting; frame's verso retaining a fragment of a gallery/submission label for the 1967 "Virginia Artists Exhibition" held at VMFA. Circa 1967. 41" x 51" OA. Catalogue Note: Thomas Elston Thorne (1909-1976) was a Maine- and later Virginia-based painter and master draughtsman, who taught at William & Mary from 1940 through 1975. As an educator and artist, he experimented with different styles and techniques that he shared with his many students over the years, including celebrated abstract artist Lynne Drexler and accomplished photographer Willie Anne Wright.

Housed in the original painted-over frame signed and dated verso "Thomas Thorne 1965" and also inscribed with the apparent title "Exploration", and a $100 price. Circa 1965. 44 1/2" x 23 3/4" OA.       Lot consists of an oil on canvas painting signed lower right corner, appears to read "T.E. Thorne", however very difficult to make out. Great image of boats at sea with a lighthouse in the background. Canvas image size seen approx. 12" x18", overall frame size approx. 17" x 23". Some crackling to the canvas.
