His work showcases his talent for fine detail, and an ability to portray the variable moods of the weather and sea. It is thought that Thornley first exhibited marine works of this kind at the Royal Academy in 1859-1898, as well as the British Institution from 1861-1867.

William Anslow Thornbery / Thornley (British, 1847-1907). This oil painting on canvas is signed "W. A. Thornbery", lower right, and also bears an attributed plaque. The work depicts several ships at harbor. It is housed in a gilt frame with a dark blue border. The painting has craquelure, as well as varnish discoloration due to previous smoke exposure and age. The frame's inner gilt border is cracking. The canvas measures 14" x 12", and the frame measures 21 1/2" x 19 1/2". In-house shipping is available.
