Mackenzie Thorpe Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1956 -

Despite now counting author J.K. Rowling and Queen Elizabeth II among his fans, the career path of British artist Mackenzie Thorpe did not start smoothly. Born into a working-class family, undiagnosed dyslexia caused him to leave school without any formal qualifications and he worked briefly as a manual laborer. However, his passion for painting gave him the confidence to apply to Middlesborough College of Art, where he was accepted on the strength of his enthusiasm and existing portfolio. He later studied at Byam Shaw School of Art in London.

Mackenzie Thorpe's prints, calendars, and greeting cards with his distinctive black-and-white figures and emotional pull have helped propel him into the ranks of well-respected international and commissioned artists. Mackenzie Thorpe prints and sculptures, in particular, have become highly sought after. Buy collectible contemporary prints from Invaluable to enhance your living space.

Mackenzie Thorpe (b.1956) ▴ Mackenzie Thorpe (b.1956) 'V&A', Victoria and Anya signed with artist's monogram l.l., inscribed verso, coloured pastel 68.5 x 85.5cm Provenance: With Halcyon Gallery. The present lot is stylistically different to the lively and playful designs we expect from Mackenzie Thorpe. He described it as one of his most significant pieces and it has an emotional impact on the viewer. Here we see two children dwarfed by the dramatic landscape of the work. They are depictions of twelve-year-olds, Victoria and Anya; two children who had suffered hardship following the tragedy at Chernobyl. They came to stay with the artist and his family in the summer of 1993 on a programme to give children an opportunity to escape the deprivation of home. The food grown in their hometown was highly contaminated and the children were malnourished resulting in stunted growth. The trip was successful, but Mackenzie worried that they had been given a taste of luxury in Britain that would be unattainable to them later. He has depicted this feeling in pastel by showing the children as if they have been taken to the top of a cliff and been allowed to look 'at the beauty of a vastness they had never seen before'. The Thorpes remained in contact with Victoria and Anya, and the children and their families have returned to visit. Condition Report: Framed: 103 x 119.5cm Not viewed out of glazed frame but appears to be in good condition. Well presented and ready to hang.
