    Clara Thorward (American, b. 1887), "On the Beach," oil on board, possibly a scene along Lake Michigan, c. 1920, double sided work with a still life on the verso, signed lower left, measures 9.75 x 12.50 inches unframed, overall in the frame it measures 13 x 16 inches. CONDITION: Good, some chipping to the edges but not visible from the front, frame with losses. Born in South Bend, Indiana, Clara Thorward became a painter, etcher and teacher. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland School of Art, the Art Students League in New York, the Thurn School of Modern Art, and with Hans Hofmann and Henry Keller. She won numerous prizes and exhibited widely including the Hoosier Salon, and the Salons of America in 1934. Her style ranged from realist to abstraction.
