A slightly clouded sky overstretches the scene. Particularly appealing is the sublime coloring that perfectly captures the mysterious light mood of a setting summer sun. The painting is signed lower left ‘Thum’. It is titled on the stretcher ‘Tote Wasser an der Donau’ as well as ‘Tote Wasser Wien’. The painting shows overall slight craquelure and tiny framing-related paint losses along the edges. The frame is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The painting measures 60 x 75 cm. Est: €2,464 - €3,080

Oil on canvas Germany, 1st half of the 20th century Erich Thum; pseudonym for Elfriede Thum-Lauckner (1886-1952) - Berlin painter and graphic artist Signed ‘Thum’ upper right Dimensions: 80 x 90 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Rhineland-Palatinate Scenic representation of a strip mine, whose austere beauty is captured in expressive colors; the auction record for an oil painting by Erich Thum is set at over €13,000 At first glance, one might think, the German artist Elfriede Thum-Lauckner, who used the pseudonym of Erich Thum, depicted an idyllic mountain landscape in this expressive oil painting. Upon closer inspection, however, one realizes that it is the depiction of a strip mine. The artist was fascinated by the contrast of industry and nature. Thus she created several motifs which portray the modern industrial age, in addition to picturesque river landscapes influenced by Pointillism. Skillfully Thum managed to capture the roughness and bleakness of the subject matter in a powerful color scheme that captivates the viewer. The painting is signed ‘Thum’ upper right. It is in good condition. On the reverse backed with several patches of canvas. Some scattered retouchings to the sky. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 93 x 103 cm, the stretcher frame measures 80 x 90 cm. Thum 1930' and titled in pencil on the stretcher 'Callas & Amaryllis' Dimensions: 95 x 80 cm Silvered wooden frame: 107 x 93 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany An expressive impasto still life of flowers. The current highest auction record for an oil painting by Erich Thum is more than €13,000 The Amaryllis and calla blossoms in red and white are shining on the dark blue background of this painting by the Berlin painter Elfriede Thum-Laukner who worked under the pseudonym of Erich Thum. The flowers are placed in a crystal vase, which, apart from occasional reflections, almost melts with the dark ground, as do the green leaves. Thus, the focus is put on the flowering. Condition: The impasto layer of paint shows shrinkage cracks due to age as well as - mostly in the outer area - fractionally lifted particles. Some small retouched spots are visible under UV light in the area of the blossoms and the margins, the canvas verso has been stabilized. The overall impression of the painting is according to age good. The frame shows some small losses of color. The painting measures 95 x 80 cm, the framed dimensions are 107 x 93 cm. • Erich Thum (1886-1952), Oil Painting, Paul Wegener, c. 1913
      Jan. 29, 2015

Erich Thum (1886-1952), Oil Painting, Paul Wegener, c. 1913

      Est: €3,200 - €4,000

Oil on canvas Germany, circa 1913 Erich Thum; pseudonym for Elfriede Thum-Lauckner (1886-1952) - Berlin painter and graphic artist Signed with 'Thum' upper left Antique-stile, silvered wood frame (not original) Dimensions: 75 x 70 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany An impressive portrait of the actor and director Paul Wegener in the expressionist style. The current highest auction record for an oil painting by Erich Thum is more than €13,000 The present oil painting by Elfriede Thum-Lauckner (1886-1952) shows a dynamic chest portrait of the actor and director Paul Wegener (1874-1948). Since 1913, Thum was married with the playwright Rolf Lauckner, who wrote, among others, the screenplay for the film 'Krach und Glück um Künnemann' directed by Paul Wegener. The portrait is rendered in the artist's characteristic expressionist style of painting, which Thum followed at this time, not least due to the influence of her husband. The luminous monochrome blue of the background is just as impressive as the stylized portrait of the man in shades of greens, blue and red.
