Als sie 1937 das Ausstellungsverbot erhielt, schloss sie sich ihrem Ehemann Rolf Lauckner an und arbeitete gelegentlich als Bühnenbildnerin. Thum gehört zu einer Generation von Künstlern, die aufgrund der nationalsozialistischen Kunstpolitik zu Unrecht in Vergessenheit gerieten. Unser Gemälde zeigt, mit welcher Souveränität sie strahlende Farben und fließende Formen einzusetzen wusste. "Frauen" - Öl auf Leinwand. 1915. - 48 x 36 cm. - Verso auf dem Keilrahmen mit Pinsel in Schwarz wohl von fremder Hand betitelt und datiert. -- Die in Berlin geborene Elfriede Thum hatte ein bewegtes Leben: Nach einem Studium in Lausanne, wo sie ihren zukünftigen Ehemann Rolf Lauckner, den Stiefsohn Hermann Sudermanns, kennenlernte, ging sie nach Dresden. Während eines Aufenthalts in Nidden 1909 lernte sie Max Pechstein kennen. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Ehemann bezog sie wenig später eine Villa in Tzschetschnow bei Frankfurt/Oder. Bereits während des Ersten Weltkrieges signierte sie mit „Erich Thum“. Zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus galt ihr Werk als entartet und ab 1937 erhielt sie Ausstellungsverbot. The sheets are slightly darkened, one additionally shows minor defects in the edges and is slightly trimmed at the lower margin, affecting the title. The current highest auction record for an oil painting by Erich Thum is more than €13,000 The present oil painting by Elfriede Thum-Lauckner (1886-1952) shows a dynamic chest portrait of the actor and director Paul Wegener (1874-1948). Since 1913, Thum was married with the playwright Rolf Lauckner, who wrote, among others, the screenplay for the film 'Krach und Glück um Künnemann' directed by Paul Wegener. The portrait is rendered in the artist's characteristic expressionist style of painting, which Thum followed at this time, not least due to the influence of her husband. The luminous monochrome blue of the background is just as impressive as the stylized portrait of the man in shades of greens, blue and red. The painting is signed with 'Thum' upper left and mounted in an antique-style, silvered wood frame (not original). It is in good condition, showing light wear. The overall size, including the frame, is 88 x 84 cm. The stretcher measures 75 x 70 cm. Upon closer inspection, however, one realizes that it is the depiction of a strip mine. The artist was fascinated by the contrast of industry and nature. Thus she created several motifs which portray the modern industrial age, in addition to picturesque river landscapes influenced by Pointillism. Skillfully Thum managed to capture the roughness and bleakness of the subject matter in a powerful color scheme that captivates the viewer. The painting is signed 'Thum' upper right. The present painting of a stage scene is rendered in the artist's characteristic expressionist style, which Thum followed at this time, not least due to the influence of her husband. The luminous monochrome blue of the background is just as impressive as the gleaming light effects in the center. The painting is signed with the monogram 'Th' lower right. It is stamped with the estate's stamp on verso. The cardboard shows light marks, where the frame has rubbed. Besides, there is a faint crease in the lower right corner. The works are executed in deft line and skillfully composed. The two lithographs are each signed lower right in pencil 'Thum'. And each titled lower left in pencil 'Dolce far niente' and 'Mittag(...) (?)'. The sheets are slightly darkened, one additionally shows minor defects in the edges and is slightly trimmed at the lower margin, affecting the title. The frames are in good condition with slight signs of wear. The images measure 27.5 x 36.7 cm und 27.5 x 38.2 cm. The framed dimensions are 54 x 55.5 cm resp. 42.5 x 52.5 cm.
